About Resto Gare And Train Bar Bistro

Aperçu historique du site de La Vieille Gare / History of the Station

The old CNR St Boniface railway station, in which you sit, was built in 1913.   It was the second station built by Canadian Northern Railway in St Boniface and it carries the roofline that has become a trademark for Canadian Northern stations.

The Canadian Northern Railway started in Manitoba and the Sprague line, served by this old station (vieille gare), was Canadian Northern’s second venture in 1898. It was routed from St Boniface through the sparsely settled farmland and muskeg to Lake of the Woods.  By 1902, this line was extended into the States through Warroad, back into Canada at Rainy River and ultimately provided another line for farmers’ grain to reach Port Arthur.

By 1906 there were 132 villages and towns on the prairie that would not have been there except for the Canadian Northern Railway development.  This led to unprecedented levels of immigration, with 400,000 arriving in 1913 alone.  By 1917 Canadian Northern, the upstart Manitoba Company was bankrupt (partly because of the war) and the Canadian government took over the railroad and named it Canadian National Railway (CNR).  The station was operated until the early 1950’s and as an item of interest was used by many families to flee the rising Red River, in 1950.

1970 La Vieille Gare Restaurant

On  the 20th of March 1970, in front of many personalities & member of the press, the first sod was cut to

begin the transformation of “the old station”.  It was the first “fine dining” restaurant in Winnipeg.  One of Winnipeg’s top French Restaurants since 1970, when the beautifully renovated old railway station welcomed it first patrons.

2008 Resto Gare Bistro

In 2008, the restaurant was redesigned and renewed as the French bistro “Resto Gare”.

The old train station remains one of Winnipeg’s most stunning dining rooms. Historic elements like dark wood framing, grand lighting fixtures and railcar lounge speak of the building’s train station past. Scarlet drapes and elegant upholstery emanate subtle sexiness. A gigantic lipstick red booth now divides the large dining room, and the best seat to snuggle with a date is in front of the industrial-chic fireplace.

The coach, now used as Resto Gare’s Bar car, was built in 1914 as an observation car for the Canadian Northern Railway (car #9647).  In 1921 the coach was transferred to the Canadian National Railways.  The coach became a sleeping car, #1458, named “TRENTON” in 1953.  It then became a “Rule Instruction Car” #15022, before being bought by the restaurant.

This place was a great experience for a small group. I feel as though 2-4 people would be the ideal amount, especially if you’re looking for seating in the train. It would get a little cramped for space otherwise. Great food, well worth the price. The only criticism would be the servers and staff, they could have been more hospitable, but we came in on a very busy evening so its justified. I wish they had live jazz on more nights throughout the week, I feel as though that’d be a great addition. Got the beef bourguignon, and escargot, would highly recommend. Would gladly come back and try out different items on their menu.

Went here for an anniversary dinner and thankfully it was fairly quiet. The service, from Brian, was good but he was quite monotone and expressionless. Food was served quickly and tasted delicious. Near the end of our meal two new groups came in and got seated right beside each other, and very close to us, in the otherwise empty train car. Also, a different server came over and stood right beside us with his mask down to talk to one of the tables. Good thing we were leaving, as I would not have been comfortable spending the whole meal that close to others.

I'm a picky eater and so read reviews about that place before going. Several comments were complaints about the food being overpriced. I still wanted to get my own experience though and form my own opinion. As a seafood lover, I went for their Tresor de la mer. My expectations were high and reasonable for a $110 dish! And this was such a letdown. The scallops, shrimps and vegetables barely had any flavor. Don't be fooled by the picture of the dish! It looks good but it has nothing special. Charging $110 for this should be illegal. Needless to say that I will never return to that place, or recommend it to anyone. Bummer.

First time at Resto Gare and Train Bar Bistro. Not much space for parking. However it was really nice inside. Decor just needs a little touching up. The food is delicious. I had the French Onion Soup for starters, it's delicious. Then I had the special for the main course, rib eye steak with mashed potatoes, vegetables, and two onion rings with gravy sauce on the bottom. That was delicious too.

A fantastic bit of Winnipeg's culture, and delightfully french fine dining. The restaurant is a train smushed into the old train station, with every bit of its interior and exterior oozing with character. Cozy carpeteting, china cups and crystal chandeliers. They reportedly get packed on live jazz nights.

Old world service meets today's culinary magic. Few places left in Winnipeg like this gem. If you are looking for a special place to take someone who means something to you or mark a special event this is the place. Food was simply perfect, attentive service and great decor. Make sure you consider this restaurant, one of the top places in Winnipeg.

First time at Resto Gare with my partner for my birthday and it was fantastic! Eric was an amazing server, he was professional, prompt, and gave my partner and I amazing hospitality. I appreciate the service he gave to us. The train is beautiful, its definitely a must see and as well as the restaurant. When we went there was a large party in the back of the train and because of the sizing of the train the volume could get quite loud, so it was a bit hard of hearing and had to increase volume to have conversation. But it really did not damper our experience! We were still able to have an amazing dinner ! Thank you to all staff at Resto Gare!

Absolutely wonderful!!! We had our wedding there in August and everything was more than amazing. Linda was very kind, accommodating, and helpful. Especially when Covid-19 restrictions kept changing and we'd have to adjust certain details for our wedding. The staff were and are always lovely. The food was delicious! Our guests couldn't stop talking about the Prime Rib and how good it was. A great restaurant that our families will continue to come back to for birthdays and special occasions.
