Dr. Brent Symes (B.A. Honours University of New Brunswick ’95), (M.Ed. University of New Brunswick ’97), and (Ph.D. University of Alberta ’01) has been licensed as a Registered Psychologist in Alberta since 2000 and the Northwest Territories beginning in 2004. Brent also served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta for 15 years. Brent has been a Senior Partner at Randall Symes Psychological Services since its inception in 2001. Brent was appointed to the oral examination committee for the College of Alberta Psychologists in 2012. Current professional memberships include the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta and the Canadian Psychological Association. Brent has supervised numerous psychology students as well as interns for the purpose of registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists. He has also qualified as an expert witness in the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench.

Clinically, he has experience working in a variety of settings, including the Adult Psychiatry Program at Alberta Hospital Ponoka and numerous school jurisdictions across Alberta. For most of his career, Brent has specialized in psycho-educational testing and assessments to help identify a variety of developmental disabilities through cognitive, academic, social and emotional, as well as behavioral testing among school-aged children and adolescents. In addition, Brent is a consulting psychologist for several pediatric and adult Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) multidisciplinary diagnostic clinics across Alberta and the Northwest Territories. His role on these teams is to help identify the neurocognitive as well as neurobehavioral challenges in children and adults prenatally exposed to alcohol. Along with his clinical work in the area of FASD, Brent has provided diagnostic FASD training regionally and nationally through the Rajani FASD Assessment and Diagnostic Clinic Training Services.  His work in the area of FASD also involves ongoing research, conference presentations, and journal publications. Research interests include cognitive, language, and neurobehavioral profiles of children and adults prenatally exposed to alcohol. In his free time, Brent enjoys staying active and travelling with his wife and daughters.
