Busy terminal in the summer. The boat isn't large, so you need to arrive early to ensure you catch a sailing... but that isn't completely consistent (the need to be over prepared). People are not always consistent creatures in their travel plans. Tuesday is dangerous goods day, so the second sailing in the morning doesn't run for the public. If you miss the first ferry, you have to wait four hours instead of two. The deckhands do a great job getting everyone squeezed onto the deck, making the most of what the smaller ferry has to offer. If you do have to wait a sailing, it's a beautiful spot to spend a minute and especially when the weather is nice. If tide is low, go down to the beach, duck under the walkway to the docks and make it around under the ramp to the ferry to take in the view of the spit. If you're lucky enough you'll see whales during the sailing.
