Our instructor was honestly great but they don’t let you paint your own product and when I finally received mine, the paint job that was performed absolutely ruined my mug. It’s sloppy and you could tell the person who did it didn’t care, I emailed them about it and they completely ghosted me.. for that, I would absolutely not recommend this studio and I would choose to go to a different one next time.. there is tons of studios in van that provide the same service and actually care about their customers. Update: Still waiting for a reply to my email. If the studio can find the time to reply to my google review I’m sure there was plenty of time to reply to my email :)

Update from response: I've had go missing a matcha bowl, chopstick holders, smaller plates. The matcha bowl specifically was from my very first lesson that has gone missing. Signed up for HiDe Ceramic Works Regular Class. The classes does not have any structure. They teach you simple things for the first two classes and the rest is expected to be self taught or we would ask the instructor. Class that I attended was packed with other students (9) + drop-in students (2) making the instructor unavailable. Studio is extremely messy and disorganized. Tools needs to be replace and once work is completed it generally may go missing or show up 6+ weeks later. There is no estimated time frame as to when things are fired or sent back.

Cool place to try out pottery! Instructor was nice and it's super satisfying to work a piece of clay into something you can take home and use! Good way to get your creative juices going. There aren't a lot of glaze colours though and beware, your pottery will shrink a bit in the kiln.

I wrote this review because this place made me think I was bad at ceramics, while it’s proven wrong in other places. I took the beginner class a while ago, I think it’s not very friendly, especially for beginners. Hide is very nice and fun as an established artist, but he never teaches. His students (I think) teach, but I don’t think they did a very good job. In my first two sessions they just gave us iPads to watch YouTube videos instead of demonstrating in person. When I had questions, they either were too busy with their own ceramic work, or they gave me an awkward smile and ignored me. When I made mistakes with the clay and asked for help, they came by with some feedback that’s not very constructive (“oh, you shouldn’t have done it this way”), eventually I had to redo my work, and it could all be avoided if my questions were answered/they gave me feedback earlier on. Being a beginner means that I will make mistake, and reaching out for help is a big part of the growth. The entire place was not very inclusive, it almost felt like I needed to befriend with the instructors to get their help. That feeling also occurred to me when I attended their workshop before taking the class. In short, you would have great time here if you already know how to work with clays and want to explore your styles or to make some friends. But for beginners who want to learn the basic techniques, I’ve learned so much quicker in other studios.

I took my family for a 90-minute drop-in class. The instructor was great, friendly and very patient. We each made 2 items. The studio is friendly to newcomers and the instructor gives you a basic rundown of pottery techniques. The waiting period from the class to actually receiving the item is about 2 months due to the drying, firing and other processes. I’d definitely recommend bringing a date or family here for the class.

I took the 4 person drop in class this past Friday (February 4) with my friend and the instructor was nice but it felt like we didn’t really receive a lot of direction, if any. A few of her friends/ other pottery members came in and started working periodically- by the time we were half way through the 90 minute drop in class there were 8/9 people in the super small space. I don’t think that’s covid friendly at all. It was really weird, I could tell the other 2 taking the class were equally as frustrated/ annoyed. We had to chase our instructor to ask questions, it almost felt as if we were interrupting her hangout session. Bottom line- we payed $80 to watch our instructor make pottery and hang with her sister and friends!

We had such an amazing experience for our 90-minute drop in class! The studio is really cozy, and our instructor Alec was very helpful and professional - he guided us through the whole process, and assisted us whenever we needed help. Looking forward to receiving our items! UPDATE: loved it so much, came second time with a group of friends! Another amazing experience, looking forward to picking up our items!

Walking into the studio felt warm and welcoming during the 90-minute drop in. Everyone in the studio worked on their own project while Hide shared tips, wisdom and stories which made the experience quite personable. Intimate studio space provided number of wheels and various types of clay to explore pottery during short but sweet drop in session. If you're looking for a casual environment where you feel welcomed to explore and play with clay, give this studio a try. It's a gem.
