★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Finally back open after being closed for 9 months after Covid!! You can get steamed buns individually (hot) or refrigerated or frozen in packs of 6. We usually get 6 bbq pork buns for the kids school lunches and some coconut buns for a treat. They have frozen pizza dough too. A Vancouver institution.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great selection of Bao buns (tried spicy pork, beef and chicken) for reasonable prices! I believe they are $3.25 each. Some reviewers will say this is more than other places but these have more filling than those other bakeries!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My only complaint is that I’ve never had a bun from here that didn’t stick to the parchment paper. I end up having to eat every bun upside down to avoid the torso of my shirt becoming pork belly. Oh well, let’s call it a novelty open-face bao. That aside, this is thee place for pork buns. Fresh dough, and plenty of quality meat inside.
Contrary to several claims in other reviews, Original New Town Bakery (Est 1948) seems to have nothing to do with Newtown Bakery (Est 1980). The latter’s website even states on its Locations page, “Please note that we do not operate the Original New Town Bakery on Cambie Street in Vancouver.”
Someone else left a one star review due to this place being owned/operated by “old people”. That’s a bit ridiculous, but if you are looking for a trendy bun then yes, this is not the place for you. Unfortunately you’ll have to go elsewhere for your matcha infused bao with delectable Beyond Meat filling.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The food is AMAZINGGG, and I love the owners of this place. It is so authentic, especially those BBQ Pork Buns are to die for. I go here at least 2 times a week because they’re just that addicting, and I always get amazing service. Support these businesses during these hard times!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Love the steamed BBQ Pork buns here and make sure to leave some room for the apple tarts too. Check out the coconut buns and egg tarts too. The couple that run this bakery are super nice and you feel very welcome every time you visit. TIP: Apple tarts are usually available a little later in the day from my experience
