Our two day stay was disgusting. The first night there, shelter staff had granted permission to extend our curfew, then fabricated that I missed curfew. Staff made me sign a blank document in order to have a bed for my child and myself. Shelter staff, (Hitler), argued about the difference between "Mandated" and FORCED "group" attendance in order to be "allowed" to stay at the shelter. The Health Board would have been gagging at the filthy sink, toilet and shower this shelter was forcing people to use. I requested cleaning supplies TWICE, each of the two mornings we woke up there, in order to make it safe for my family to use and NEVER EVER GOT ANY. For the amount of money wasted on this place, they have very little to offer a single mom who has been forced onto the streets by the City of Hamilton. If you appreciate fabricated information, collusion with those corrupt institutes like CAS or HPS being created to DESTROY your character within Hamilton, this or any other shelter can be accessed. Each one will fabricate for CAS/HPS to ensure a healthy corrupt child removal. This place was below a zero.

let me tell you the truth about Native Womens Centre. My children and I stayed for a solid 2 weeks. during that time I recieved the most disrespect multiple staff members. we were not allowed to eat unless it was eating time as the coordinator said " Do you not understand the eating time schedule OR do you need a reminder" I was shocked she just spoke to me that way... although I understood very clearly living in a shelter my children wouldnt eat the food they were starving most of the time so when they were hungry i jumped quickly and fed them. Chores: my chores were always done, but once my daughter became sick with an ear infection/ fever I decided I needed to care for her first. it was 10pm i just finished my kitchen duty and took out dinner trash, when staff demanded i take out the trash leftover from lunch and then I could return to my child. i decided to let her take it out herself (i am not a dog) and i headed back to my room to attend to my sick daughter. the next day i was written up for not completing my chore. I was LIVID!. FOOD: Nancy was sick for 1 weeks leaving staff in charge of making and preparing meals. only 3 of the staff members knew how to cook and on those nights the food was mothing but amazing. However there are some who could care less about what we ate. they would cook eggs and place them back for 2 days in the fridge and serve them again.. if there were leftovers staff would place them back in the firdge for another day. salad was also placed in fridge for 2 days and when staff decided to serve again they would chop up red peppers over the already bad salad and serve it again. Staff would also serve us expired lunch meat to eat for sandwiches. THAT WAS MY LAST STRAW. i went head to head with the coordinator and expressed my concerns, and demanded a change.. I guess she didnt like that to much. the following day i was handed a list of other shelters to go too. i reported this shelter to the MPP office, human resources and called the city. no one should be treated like this... NO ONE. the OW worker: lets just say the MPP office had her so scraaed she overpaid me because i reported once she tried to take full control over my income. LEAVING: When it was my time to go, i was told id have help leaving... no i did not. I was left with all my bags, luggage, stroller, and 2 kids all by myself. I struggled opening all door while getting the kids and my bags out.. what was staff doing? watching me on camera struggling. the cab driver who picked my up was so in shock he helped me as soon as he saw how much i was dealing with. I dont believe staying here is the best place. its once of the worst.. every other shelter in Hamilton ON know of the Native womens shelter and has heard terrible stories. FOOD BANK: all money that goes into this shelter majority of that income goes to the food bank located in the basement of the shelter. awesome right? wrong! the only way you can get food is IF you have a native background.. so if you are not native dont bother going.. they will suck you dry and leave you with nothing at all. HELP?: some of the staff are very helpful (3 people) and some will tell you " the printer has no paper". "we have no more paper in the building" " come back tomorrow" you have tape? "no we dont have tape" they choose to help who they want. IF you want help you have to get up and do it yourself.. do not wait for them to help you.. it wont happen and if it does it takes FOREVER!. most of the time they sit inside the office and gossip like little school girls that have nothing better to do. The staff at this shelter didnt make it a good experience. the other homless people did. we help one another as much as we could, switched chores and prayed for eachother.. because we knew staff never cared to begin with. Im only speaking from my experience, wouldnt write such a long review if i didnt think this shelter seriously needs to be looked into. the emotional abuse they give along with the constant neglect is ridiculous. need a place to stay... dont stay here!

I am talking about the native women's center on Rosedene Avenue. If it was for not a few outstanding employees that work there it would be horrible to stay there. The room was nice which made it bearable, I would not say all the rooms are nice though. Expect to be treated with disrespect from some of the employees. Most do the bare minimum of their job description. The staff should treat the women with dignity and respect which they do not. Opening your door in the evening without even a knock is disrespectful like they are always trying to catch you doing something. I actually think the evening staff enjoy that part of their job. It must be nice to sit in the office and just look at your phone the majority of your shift.

These women are very hardworking, thorough, and organized, and they still smile. The vast programming, and extremely friendly atmosphere make this one of the best non profit organizations out there. They make me proud to be a native.... Koodoos ladies!!!

Went here a few years ago, genuinely one of the worst experiences of my life. My mother was pregnant and she was NOT allowed to eat unless it was at the designated time, couldn't even have a snack. literally had to get a doctors note stating that she needed more food for the staff to even consider. Staff are extremely rude, you'd assume that since they are working at a shelter for people in need they'd be a bit more kind and understanding, but no, the people that worked/are working there are so incredibly judgmental, its disgusting. Can't even bring your own snacks for yourself or your children because they will take them away. If you're considering going here and you have children, DO NOT GO. Youre better off finding a different shelter, like seriously, I hope that one day this place gets shut down for good.
