About Mr. Furnace Heating and Air Conditioning

“We take pride in being part of the community and being close to the customers. We don’t have an answering service in Texas that doesn’t really know what it means to people when it’s minus 30 in Winnipeg.

We support local clubs and sports teams and I like to know all the staff and talk to their wives and husbands. At one point I went back to school and learned payroll and accounting and that served me well during the merger years, but after a little while I realized that accounting was boring for me and that I’d rather be working with people and be a problem solver.”

 

“So I moved into human resources, then operations, where I was in constant contact with employees and customers. I like people better than numbers. Admittedly numbers can be more consistent than people, but I thrive in the hot seat and I enjoy the rush you get from solving problems. I love it when a customer calls back and says ‘Thanks, I don’t know what I would have done without your help.’”


After the merger, her father exited first, buying Furnasman New Homes, which specialized in heating and plumbing systems for new construction. A few years later Tara established Mr. Furnace. In 2015 the two became one, completing the reunification of father and daughter and their companies. Tara is the general manager and her dad is still actively involved in managing the company, doing estimating, budgeting, planning and community initiatives.

Asked what it’s like being in charge of everyone, including her older brother, Tara jokes, “Well I was already bossy when I was five years old, so I guess it comes naturally to me.” She has been on the Board of the HRAI Manitoba Region for nine years and is currently the Chairperson. She also became a member of the HRAI National Board last year. Tara says she wishes she could somehow instill the confidence she has today into young women entering the HVAC field.

“Having confidence is important for any female in a male-dominated profession. You need to know your worth and your strengths and do your homework so you’re not afraid of the tough questions. Then, if you don’t differentiate by gender, generally men won’t either.” Tara has acquired a great deal of experience, working in all parts of the business, including short stints on service trucks and equipment installation projects.


She says over the years there have been a few instances when she was on the receiving end of gender bias, such as being called “Babe,” and the odd phone-in customer saying “Is there a man there that I can talk to?” “Usually it would be older people, because they were born in a different time and a different world.” On one occasion the ‘man’ issue was pressed, so Tara switched the call to a male service person, but it was soon rerouted back to Tara, who was more knowledgeable on the subject at hand.


Tara’s leadership has gone beyond technical expertise and day-to-day operations, as she has instilled a win-win-win customer-employee-company attitude in the recombined firm, and has made some bold strategic moves to grow revenue. Last month we reported on her trailblazing construction heat initiative, which is now bearing fruit.


She is considered one of the dynamic contributors at the HRAI and says: “One of the industry problems is that there is a big underground market with unqualified, unpermitted, unsafe work going on. It drags everyone down with it because it makes it harder for the good firms to charge the right price for our work. Through the HRAI we can address this problem and educate the public about the value of qualified technicians and safe working practices. The HRAI is important.”

Asked for one last piece of advice for women who aspire to advance in the HVAC business or become a leader like Tara, she says “Learn everything you can and earn your stripes, then don’t be thinking ‘I hope they like me.’ Think instead ‘I’m a valuable contributor and I’m going to be fine.’”

The technician who installed my new furnace/a/c system and air cleaner system were excellent. The only thing I'm not happy about is when I called to let them know that when removing my old furnace the tech's scratched my back door and later on I looked outside and found that my siding was dented, I left a message with their call center and no one has answered me yet. I also wanted to know if I qualified for any rebates and there has been no answer as of today Sept. 7/2021. All I wanted was to have my queries answered.

I was super impressed right from the start with a friendly conversation over the phone to book my appointment. A follow up call with a question was met by another staff member who once again was super friendly and nice. I felt like I had been a customer for years not a first time. A tech came and Fixed and cleaned up the piping some neighbour hood kids had dumped sand and rocks down and checked the furnace after as well. Super friendly service and great pricing. Booked a second appointment for duct cleaning next week. Definitely will be a customer continuing forward and will reccomend you to everybody.

I had Mr. Furnace install a new AC last June. When I turned it on this year, it would blow warm air, so I called Mr. Furnace. They couldn't come right away, but no problem. They made some changes and made an appointment for me the next day, but they called the night before and said they could come then. When Craig arrived he was professional, knowledgeable and explained what he did and why. Such a nice person to have when you know nothing about AC's. He was very patient and that the company was there to make sure the customer was satisfied. He is definitely an ASSET to Mr. Furnace. I also dealt wit Joel and he is so patient and co-operative and there to make sure the customers problem is taken care of properly. He doesn't make the customer feel like they are a bother, but that he appreciates the customers business. My AC is still not work to my satisfaction, 1/2 degree cooler in 7 hours, so they will be rectifying that problem again tomorrow. I would not hesitate to use Mr. Furnace in the future. In fact, I will be needing a new furnace in the future and intend on using Mr. Furnace. Thank you, Craig and Joel. Victor V.

In case you're wondering how impressed I am with Mr. Furnace, let me tell you that I’m writing this half an hour after the job was completed. I met Dave from Sales, Andrew, the installer, his apprentice, Miguel, and Joel who delivered supplies. I also spoke on the phone with Chase and Riley. I had nothing but the most professional and friendly interactions with all of them; from scheduling and going out of their way to reschedule at my request, to the very educational sales meeting , to the punctuality, speed, and cleanliness of the tradesmen, to the willingness of everyone to explain everything thoroughly more than once. I get the feeling that everyone working at Mr. Furnace treats it as a family business and cares greatly about it and the impression they leave with the customer. Looking to waste your time and money? Then look no further! The experience I've had with the manager redefined my understanding of bad service. A few key takeaways: - Making countless calls over a period of time about one warranty repair and getting no result is exhausting. - Countless visits from one technician along with soothing words from the manager was annoying because of it's pointlessness. - One out of three techs was able to troubleshoot the issue. - The manager stood out by suggesting to replace furnace components, for an extra cost, which were working fine and were not related to the warranty repair instead of fixing the known defect. - Finally and most importantly, have your portable electric heater ready at -30 Β°C to warm up one room in the house, while they come up with another useless solution or while they're servicing 15 other customers with no heat that called just before you. By far the worst experience I've had with any trades so far!

Great company to deal with, they were on time for both the estimate and the work itself. Dave was very knowlegable and spent the time to explain the different products and how everything works. Dave & Andrew did an awesome job on the install. We have new carpet and vinyl flooring and they took time to protect it all and make sure they didn't make a mess, even though it was raining outside. I will highly recommend them to anyone and will be giving them a call again when it is time to replace our air conditioner.

Recently we had an Energy Efficient furnace installed by Mr. Furnace. Dave was very informative. He explained the procedures for the installation and gave us tips on maintenance. With the help of his installer Andrew the whole procedure was completed in an extremely timely and professional manner. The company stands for quality and good workmanship. I would highly recommend Mr. Furnace.

Contacted Mr. Furnace and had Dave came down and provided a quote. Was on time and gave a great explanation on the service I required. A professional looking quote was given compared to scribbles on note paper I had received from competitors. The price was great and we booked an install. The installation team came on time and did a great job removing the old Furnace and replacing with the new one. They protected the floors and left the site as clean as it was before they came. Great overall experience from the Mr. Furnace team. Would highly recommend them to family and friends. Thanks again Mr. Furnace.
