My son started learning mental math and abacus at MACS about 2 years ago. He was taught easy to remember skills to help develop a strong foundation for math and logical thinking. For anyone looking to improve their child's numerical abilities at a young age, MACS will not only give your child an enormous head start in mathematics, but will also drill learning skills that will benefit him/her for the rest of their life. As a previous student of MACS, I would recommend anyone to start learning mathematics with mental abacus. Many students who struggle in middle to high school mathematics typically have a weak foundation in basic arithmetic. Mental abacus is thus essential, as it provides a sturdy foundation, allowing more difficult topics to be learned much easier. You cannot start building the third floor of the building without the first floor, after all. But why MACS? Ms. Guo is an experienced teacher who pays attention to every student's needs. She's kind and engaging while teaching, and strict when assigning homework. She will gladly communicate with you about your child's strengths and weaknesses and answer any questions you may have. Even though I was a lazy child that hated to do homework, Ms. Guo's persistence pushed me to get a huge head start in mathematics. I first started when I was 5 years old, and I was able to compute squares and square roots when I was just 7 years old and then proceed to solve math competition level word problems. I was accepted into the University Transition Program, and entered UBC at the age of 15. To this day, even my upper-level mathematics courses, I still use mental abacus to solve simple arithmetic problems, which allows me solve the bigger question much faster than others. Math builds from the basics, and to have a profound understanding and swift execution of the basics , Mental Abacus Chinese School is the school for you.

My daughter, currently 11, has been learning math with Ms. Guo for at least 6 years now, her Math stays in top level in her daily school which makes her feel confidence in school. My son, currently 9, is also learning math with Ms. Guo. In this abacus, he learns math and also how to follow instructions which is very important as well. Both of my kids go through their school math smoothly with no problem. Yes, they complain about the extra math work (from abacus) which they need to do daily, however, they know they are the beneficiary in the hard work.

For those parents who wish for their young children to one day pursue a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), the Mental Abacus Chinese School is a weekend class that you may want to consider. The beginning classes revolve around the basic concepts of the Chinese Abacus. After a few months of learning my son is now able to add and subtract up to 100 without a calculator in his head and with his fingers fairly quickly all before the age of 6 which is pretty impressive. I'm excited to see how far my son's math skills will grow and progress. So far so good thank you helping my son grow!

Mental abacus is amazing. My son started when he was 6, at the beginning of COVID because we were homeschooling and I didn't want him to fall too far behind in math. Before starting abacus, he could count to 100 and do simply addition and subtraction. There was no indication he had any talent in math. After a few classes I was very surprised he could follow the abacus method. In under a year, he could add a series of numbers in the thousands together, all mentally, faster than I could type the question into a calculator. He is 8 years old now and very confident at math, he's doing multiplication questions in the thousands mentally. It's really fun to see your child progress and be challenged, it's amazing what our children can do if they are told they can do it!
