About Mandolin Books & Coffee Company

mandolin sketch

Mandolin Books and Coffee Company is a cozy cafe and used bookstore that was first established in 2003. Located in the business district of the historic Highlands community, Mandolin has long been a treasured gathering place for the neighbourhood. We offer delicious food and drinks, as well as a wide selection of high quality used books, both fiction and non-fiction.

People drop in to Mandolin for many reasons... Some are looking for a quiet place to study and others are seeking a relaxing conversation or engaging discussion with friends.  Some stop along the way while on a walk for a refreshing drink.  Some drive or bike longer distances for a favourite item on our menu.   Some are looking to find their next great reading adventure or the perfect gift for someone special.  Some head straight for the children's section at the back hoping to entertain young ones, and some are eager to relax amid the flowers on our patio.  Some are simply exploring the neighbourhood and wander through our doors ready for whatever awaits.  All receive a warm welcome.

Mandolin Books and Coffee Company is proud to be one of several unique, locally-owned businesses in the colourful commercial district along 112th Avenue in Edmonton‘s historic Highlands neighbourhood.  We sell Community League memberships on behalf of both the Highlands and Bellevue Community Leagues and are pleased to support community events whenever possible.

We are independent and locally-owned.  We feature locally-roasted Catfish Coffee.  Our food is largely sourced from local suppliers. Each month Mandolin displays the original artwork of a differrent Edmonton artist in the store.  You will also find a few treasures within our book selection that feature our neighbourhood and our own home grown writers.

The current owner of Mandolin is Lianne Traynor.  She and her family have lived in Highlands since 1999 and are deeply committed to providing a place for community members to meet, work, relax, enjoy each other's company and build deeper connections.  Lianne is an avid reader and likes her lattes extra sweet.

Thanks to Yvonne Rezek for the use of her artwork on this page and to Ben Garcia, Leanne Strilchuk and Marj Balser for photograhy used throughout.

Customer WiFi: yes Washrooms: yes Power outlets: no Pet friendly: no Parking: Street Food/Drinks: really good coffee and a pretty large selection of food considering the size of the establishment. Bar that I got was not too sweet and just the right amount of tartness to complement my cappuccino. Service: from the looks of it there was only one person working granted it is a smaller establishment. You need to go up and grab your stuff when it's ready. Not sure what the service would be like if there was less people. Atmosphere: very cozy and compact. Books everywhere so you might feel a little claustrophobic.

A great escape. Really good hot chocolate. Delicious sweets. Great options for new or reused books. Cosy seating. Good pandemic precautions and use of masks. Even bike parking!

Friendly staff, great coffee & even asked my milk preference. Many awesome books at good prices. Plus, the patio is a nice touch. Didn’t get a chance to look at their food.

What a lovely place to spend the mornings oe afternoon alone or with a friend. The coffee tastes good and the interior decor (hello, book lovers) is absolutely beautiful and cozy. A good variety of old and new books. If you bring your own coffee mug you get a 50 cents discount. The staff is nice too. There’s a patio to be enjoyed in the summer. It’s a place to come back many times.

Edmonton's best kept secret? The book selection is good given the size, the espresso is delicious (right on Catfish), and their donuts might be the best in Edmonton. Top notch, very class.

The staff at this gorgeous little cafe are so friendly and the food and drinks are great. The ambience of this little bookstore cafe is so refreshing and welcoming, and the prices are really competitive. Why would anyone go to a cheap coffee chain store, when they could get REAL coffee at enjoy it in a place like this? It's worth a visit just to check out the kitsch interior, I loved the counter made of real books!
