About Livestock Identification Services

Livestock Identification Services Ltd. (LIS) is a not-for-profit company that was incorporated under Part 9 of the Companies Act on April 4, 1998.  LIS was established by the cattle and horse industry to assume responsibility for brand registration, livestock inspection, livestock dealer licensing, stray animals and related activities when those functions were privatized by the Alberta Government in 1998. 

On November 1, 1998 the Alberta Government appointed LIS as the delegated authority of the Minister of Agriculture under the Brand Act, the Livestock Identification and Brand Inspection Act, the Livestock and Livestock Products Act and the Stray Animals Act. In January 2009 the Brand Act, the Livestock Identification and Brand Inspection Act, the Livestock and Livestock Products Act  were repealed and replaced with the Livestock Identification and Commerce Act (LICA). In 2009, LIS was continued as the delegated authority of the Minister under LICA and the Stray Animals Act.

  • Alberta Livestock Dealers and Order Buyers Association (ALDOBA)
  • Feeders Associations of Alberta (FAA)
  • Horse Industry Association of Alberta (HIAA)
  • Western Stock Growers’ Association (WSGA)
