About Liberty Security - Red Deer

As far as financing strategies go, the one that Nathan Baldry and his partners used to get his business started certainly qualifies as unconventional. Using a $5,000 line of credit and a no-interest, no-down-payment credit card from Best Buy, they bought the equipment they needed to start Liberty Security Systems.

“We were raised with the idea of not having any debt, so we wanted to have as little debt as possible with as few obligations as possible. We could have gone to parents or aunts and uncles, but we felt like we wanted to do it on our own,” says Baldry.
Eleven-and-a-half months later, he says, they paid off the balance on that Best Buy credit card, and the business was up and running.

It was no coincidence that Baldry made his first major purchase for the company at a Best Buy. He wanted to build a business that offered more than just the usual array of key codes and sirens, and today Liberty embraces a technology-first approach to home security. That means clients have access to a whole range of high-tech goodies, from live-streaming security cameras to the ability to activate and deactivate alarms and appliances from hundreds of kilometres away through a smart phone. It’s a concept that Liberty calls home automation, and it has become the key selling point for the company.

Russell Keddie, one of Liberty’s managing partners, thinks the company’s decision to empower customers is the key to its success.

“The traditional customer service model is that you have people on phones and somebody calls in,” Keddie says. “The new model for customer service is giving them the power themselves. They can get notifications to their Smart Phone through text message or email, or push notifications.” The notifications can include a low battery, power outage, an alarm event – basically anything going on with the system. “That way they can know what’s going on. It puts the power in the customers’ hands, streamlines our business and gives the customers better services.”

Liberty continues to push forward with its innovative and technologically-oriented approach to home and commercial security. In fact, says Pat Kickham, the company’s director of business development, Liberty barely resembles a conventional security company.

“People think of burglar alarm companies as door contacts, motion sensors and an alarm,” he says. “We do that, but it’s becoming a fragment of our business now. Our systems become a gateway into the home.” Clients can now arm the system as they wish, control the thermostat and turn the lights on and off. “There are an infinite number of applications for our services,” he continues. “Some customer will think of something next week and come to us, ask us about it, and we will figure out a way to make it work.”

An ability to find solutions to customer demands stems in part from the company’s embrace of cloud technology. Avoiding traditional landline infrastructure and integrating cellular systems in their place allows Liberty to deliver data to the user whenever they need it, not just when an alarm is going off. The impact goes beyond a simple phone call, too. For example, Liberty’s high-tech set-up allows it to notify parents with a text message when their son gets home from school, or a business owner with an email that tells him how many customers entered his store on a particular day.

Another company edge results from its refusal to outsource services. In an industry where most companies are based outside of Canada or outsource services to a network of international dealers and call centres, Liberty stands apart. By building strong relationships within the relatively small geographical region it operates in, Liberty uses local knowledge to reach customer service goals and differentiate itself from the competition.

Keddie says Liberty’s open-minded approach to new technology isn’t a gimmick. The services it offers can, he says, mean the difference between life and death for their clients. Keddie recalls a recent story in which a customer had a stroke, but managed to hit the emergency button on her security system before she passed out.

“The ambulance was dispatched, they got her to the hospital and thank goodness everything turned out all right for her,” he says. “If she didn’t have that system, who knows what would have happened? Those are the things that make me happy about what we do.”

Very Happy. We just had a full alarm system as well as a 4 camera system installed in Red Deer. Sold by Mike Landry, installed by Josh and Brandon. This is the most professional install I have every seen. Everything is absolute perfection. All wires hidden, Nothing looks like it doesn't belong. No mess anywhere. Mike was very helpful answering questions we had about the app. It is also worth noting that the guys are local and available to help or answer questions, unlike most of the other alarm companies doing business in the area.

Awesome experience . We have been targeted with break ins 2 times in the past year . We contacted Mike at Liberty , had new system installed about 10 months ago . Last night we were targeted again but this time the alarm system activated , we lost nothing from inside our home or garage and the response from Liberty was fast . The person who called was patient with us on the phone and helped walk us through what we needed to do . What Mike said would happen did and we are very happy with our experience.

It is very frustrating when I’m told a manager will call me and it’s over a week later and I have not received a phone call. We purchased cameras through this company and have had multiple issues with them working properly through the app. We were originally told if our wifi wasn’t the greatest we should get them hardwired in. (More money, but then it doesn’t matter too much if our wifi isn’t great) so we chose to spend more money as per their recommendation and get them hard wired in. The app we have on our phones doesn’t work correctly because of our wifi apparently, and now we are being told there’s really nothing anyone can do. We would have never purchased these cameras if we knew it was going to be an issue. We can check the cameras from our phones only when we are home. What’s the point of that? So now we wasted money on a terrible system and are being told there’s nothing that can be done. I won’t be recommending this company or system to anyone I know. How absolutely disappointing to spend almost $1500 on something that doesn’t work correctly. Terrible customer service regarding this issue. There was no real resolution offered. The only resolution offered was essentially to get better wifi. The man I spoke to just kept saying "the cameras still work," even though they don't work how we were told they would and for the purpose we wanted them for.

We had Liberty install our security system during our new home construction. Mike was really great at the start, but it seemed like as soon as he got us under contract we were dead to him. There have been two occasions where my husband has called him to ask a question and Mike said he would call him back and never did. When we first moved into our home and asked for a walk through regarding the security system he said that wasnt his problem, that we should have done that at install and hung up on my husband saying he didnt have time for this!!! We certainly would have gone through it at install but it was a new build and we had no Wi-Fi yet and not everything had been installed at that time .The doorbell camera wasnt installed until weeks after we moved in so we were waiting to do it all at once. Eventually everything got sorted and we had a very nice guy come out and show us how to do everything. I mentioned how Mike had treated us lately and he said that was a familiar story that a lot of customers were complaining about and that he was sorry. On another note, we have called customer service with a question on two seperate occasions. Both times they set up a call back appointment with us to go over the solution, and neither time we got a call back. Very disappointed with the customer service and Mike. Chose Liberty based on the reviews here but we are certainly regretting it.

Literally everything has gone wrong with the installation of my business alarm system. From the sales person ghosting me when problems started to surface to the 3 technicians who came from Edmonton and Calgary to spend several hours trying to solve all the problems of the terrible installation.. my alarm system still doesn’t work and the local staff in Red Deer has no idea how to solve the constant problems. Based on my experience i absolutely do not recommend Liberty. My alarm system has been installed for nearly a month and still doesn’t work. Staff if nice but has been incapable of finding solutions.

We had a new home constructed and chose Liberty Security. Mike assisted us and designed a system which covered all areas of intrusion, flood, fire and low temperature. We installed Smart features that allow us to monitor the system away from home. In our last build, the builder provided a basic system at no charge, in which we had no personal input. It was rarely used and seemed useless. This time we wanted better and more coverage and that is why we chose Liberty. Mike and his team did an awesome job and were so easy to work with. We feel the package was great value. The best is the feeling of safety and security in our home. We highly recommend Mike and the Red Deer Liberty Team. Bob and Karen.

My experience with Liberty was one I would like to pass on to existing and future customers who are considering using them. When I starting using them things were ok at best. It really took a turn when I sold my house and called in to have my service canceled nothing changed I still kept receiving notifications. When I called back to ask why I was informed that the contract was not canceled and that there was still x months left on said contract and that I would be held to pay it out or that I should have convinced the new owners to take over contract. When I spoke to the first person with them which they now say there is no record of I was not made aware of this. So now I'm to either pay out the contract in full or go to court and further expense to myself.. I have bought and paid for the equipment up front so it is just the monitoring services that is owed but it is something that anyone buying their services should be aware of. They have been nothing but abrasive in the way the are dealing with this.

This company is criminal. A sales rep knocked on my door telling me that they would buy out my existing contract that I had with another company.(Fluent) After the contracts were signed I received a phone call saying that they needed to transfer our contract back over to the old company(fluent) because the sales rep had a non complete with the old company still and it was a breach of his contract to work for another company! I never gave them the okay to transfer the account over...they just did. Now I am stuck with fluent demanding thousands of dollars to cancel our policy because liberty transferred our contract over without authorization. Now the old company ( fluent) has access to my banking and is pulling out funds weekly for no reason. Its not my fault that Liberty hired a sales rep with a non compete. I have contacted liberty over and over about this issue and no one gets back to me. Liberty should have to pay for their mistake hiring a sales rep with a non compete. Liberty is transferring contracts without authorization to other companys, including banking details. This is soo wrong!!!!!!!!!
