About Liberty Security

As far as financing strategies go, the one that Nathan Baldry and his partners used to get his business started certainly qualifies as unconventional. Using a $5,000 line of credit and a no-interest, no-down-payment credit card from Best Buy, they bought the equipment they needed to start Liberty Security Systems.

“We were raised with the idea of not having any debt, so we wanted to have as little debt as possible with as few obligations as possible. We could have gone to parents or aunts and uncles, but we felt like we wanted to do it on our own,” says Baldry.
Eleven-and-a-half months later, he says, they paid off the balance on that Best Buy credit card, and the business was up and running.

It was no coincidence that Baldry made his first major purchase for the company at a Best Buy. He wanted to build a business that offered more than just the usual array of key codes and sirens, and today Liberty embraces a technology-first approach to home security. That means clients have access to a whole range of high-tech goodies, from live-streaming security cameras to the ability to activate and deactivate alarms and appliances from hundreds of kilometres away through a smart phone. It’s a concept that Liberty calls home automation, and it has become the key selling point for the company.

Russell Keddie, one of Liberty’s managing partners, thinks the company’s decision to empower customers is the key to its success.

“The traditional customer service model is that you have people on phones and somebody calls in,” Keddie says. “The new model for customer service is giving them the power themselves. They can get notifications to their Smart Phone through text message or email, or push notifications.” The notifications can include a low battery, power outage, an alarm event – basically anything going on with the system. “That way they can know what’s going on. It puts the power in the customers’ hands, streamlines our business and gives the customers better services.”

Liberty continues to push forward with its innovative and technologically-oriented approach to home and commercial security. In fact, says Pat Kickham, the company’s director of business development, Liberty barely resembles a conventional security company.

“People think of burglar alarm companies as door contacts, motion sensors and an alarm,” he says. “We do that, but it’s becoming a fragment of our business now. Our systems become a gateway into the home.” Clients can now arm the system as they wish, control the thermostat and turn the lights on and off. “There are an infinite number of applications for our services,” he continues. “Some customer will think of something next week and come to us, ask us about it, and we will figure out a way to make it work.”

An ability to find solutions to customer demands stems in part from the company’s embrace of cloud technology. Avoiding traditional landline infrastructure and integrating cellular systems in their place allows Liberty to deliver data to the user whenever they need it, not just when an alarm is going off. The impact goes beyond a simple phone call, too. For example, Liberty’s high-tech set-up allows it to notify parents with a text message when their son gets home from school, or a business owner with an email that tells him how many customers entered his store on a particular day.

Another company edge results from its refusal to outsource services. In an industry where most companies are based outside of Canada or outsource services to a network of international dealers and call centres, Liberty stands apart. By building strong relationships within the relatively small geographical region it operates in, Liberty uses local knowledge to reach customer service goals and differentiate itself from the competition.

Keddie says Liberty’s open-minded approach to new technology isn’t a gimmick. The services it offers can, he says, mean the difference between life and death for their clients. Keddie recalls a recent story in which a customer had a stroke, but managed to hit the emergency button on her security system before she passed out.

“The ambulance was dispatched, they got her to the hospital and thank goodness everything turned out all right for her,” he says. “If she didn’t have that system, who knows what would have happened? Those are the things that make me happy about what we do.”

Service is decent, but like other people have mention their contracts are extremely one sided I am almost 4 years into 5 year contract and if I decide to cancel I will have to pay for the full year that I don't intend to use the service. There is no cancellation fee or any other option, I asked to speak to the supervisor and was denied saying there is no way out of it. So at this point I am stuck with paying for a service I have no need for use. Liberty needs to understand that people's lifestyle changes and need to give users a way to get out of the contracts via cancellation. From looking at how others review the cancellation procedure I will be cancelling them well before the contract is up.

From my first contact today I was greeted and dealt with pleasantly. They were eager to help me resolve my problem and were very patient with me upon learning of my visual disability. My overall experience with Liberty has been positive in the 5+ years of service. My only complaint was that they did not inform me when my contract was up and kept the service running. It seemed there was a clerical mistake on their part and a wrong date entered for contract termination/renewal.

Liberty Security has some of the most efficient, helpful, and knowledgeable tech support lines I’ve ever experienced, not just for security services but for tech support in general. In particular, Danica (if you’re reading this, please forgive me if I misheard your name) was a shining example of excellent customer service, perfectly walking that fine line between professionalism and friendliness, and going above and beyond to help me solve a genuinely weird, ghost-in-the-machine type of tech problem. Thank you for making a complex issue feel easy!

I dealt with Amber at Liberty Alarms today and I found her to be very pleasant, thorough and helpful during my conversation with her. She handled my concerns in a very expedient and professional manner and ensured that everything was covered off with me while I was still on the phone. Amber is definitely an asset to your company who deserves recognition for her excellent work ethics and customer satisfaction. Sincerely, Paul

Liberty is very frustrating to deal with and is very unreliable. Since we moved in our new home on February 8, they have been to our house nearly 10 times for modifications and repairs to the system, and several outstanding issues remain. Their technicians are not well trained for the most part, you may finally get one that knows what they are talking about, but you have to waste your time booking service appointments after service appointments before you get one that may actually be competent. I tried reaching out directly to the manager Melissa, and left her a voicemail. She never returned my call directly. Instead, she had someone from the booking office call me to arrange a service call, Michelle. I tried calling Michelle back, realizing this was just a general number and I was just placed on hold. Who has all this time to waste?? Do yourself a favour and stay far away from this company. I have a feeling they have such good reviews because they ask their customers who leave bad reviews to take them off (they did that to me before).

Liberty did such a good job providing my business with all it's security needs. The Service Technician, PATRICK BISIMWA, was incredibly helpful both with making sure I had the right hardware but also in helping me get set up on the Liberty App and website. He was also very polite and cleaned up any dust and mess the installation caused. I am extremely happy and will recommend him to others interested in home or business security.

I have only been using Liberty for a few months but it has been great! I feel secure. Transferred services from the prior owner of the home. The activation process was easy. The tech was able to effectively guide me even when done remotely. Tech was also patient with my basic questioning as I have never had a home security system before. I would recommend to anyone.

We moved to a brand new community and as the first home inhabited we had a ton of people looking to gain our business. Liberty’s rep peas up for the competition and gave us the best package and deal so we signed up for a contract term we were comfortable with. Since then our kids have enjoyed catching Santa on camera each year and a solid peace of mind security system inside & out. We’ve helped neighbours with issues (caught on our decent image camera) as well. Now it was time to renew or move our services. I contacted Liberty and discussed. They were very easy to deal with & I spoke to a live person! I was given an amazing price along with an upgraded camera & full inspection of the current equipment with a 36 month term. Decent customer service is so hard to find these days so I’m very happy with the exceptional staff I’ve dealt with at Liberty!! Worth my money for personalized easy service when needed!
