Club Judo Anjou is the largest judo club in Canada (2012, 2013) with 486 members and one of the most succesful in the province (club of the year in 2010, 2013). Temporarily relocated in the industrial sector of Anjou for the 2012-2013 season, the club has moved in to its brand new renovated location at the Centre Communautaire Anjou on January 20th, 2014 some 600m from Hotel de Ville and the Library. The technical director, Rejean Lavoie, has been with the club for over 2 decades and has been coaching judo since the early 70's. One of his early students in Port Cartier, Jean-François Marceau, was a multiple time canadian champion, then head instructor at Anjou from where he has moved on to coach the Quebec selection and now heads the Federation de Judo du Quebec. Over the past few years, the club has had national junior champs Maria-Carla Chirila, Nogueira and Guglielmo but also caters to adults who want to do judo for recreational purposes and especially youth. The 2012-13 season has close to 50 first time students in the 5-6yr old category and many others ages as well. The sport is very girl friendly and also has had a few blind students as well. The club follows the martial art credo of discipline, respect and humility and is not simply a factory line mentality geared only to the elite. Youths with behavorial problems are helped to flourish in an environment which teaches self control and respect of others and the club has instructors give courses in some of the more impoverished schools of the city at no cost. The club's head coach is Luc Phan, one of three siblings who teach there (the Stawarz family has 5 kids who are brown/black belts) and the club regularly wins the best club trophy in the various tournaments it participates in. If you want your kids to develop their self confidence as well as agility or simply to learn how to fall properly (useful for all sports), then the Club de Judo Anjou is for you. Call and come visit the club and even take part in a practice to see how you like it.
