About Hillview Honeyworks
our story
Although we started into beekeeping is 2011, my sons Mitchell and Aidan are the 5th generation beekeepers in the Rodgers family.
Our typical year starts in mid-May removing the hives from our indoor storage and giving them feed and medication. After that, we start transferring nucs (a smaller than average colony with it’s own resources used to rebuild a population of hives) into jester boxes so they are ready for May sales. Next we start grafting and raising queens, which we have found to be more sustainable and cost effective. We feel that local Manitoba queens are more able to withstand mites and overwintering. May and June is busy with splitting hives and making up nucs for the following year.
Once the honey flow is over and extracting is done we begin medicating and feeding the hives once again. Once the bee work is all done we start into the wax rendering keeping us busy till March. Then it’s time to start this whole process again!
