About Hexagon Board Game Cafe

The Hexagon Board Game Cafe started when owners Kellie Ho and Randy Wong graduated from architecture school in 2008 and struggled to find work in the design field. Many hours and late nights were devoted to playing The Settlers of Catan and that devotion continued when Kellie and Randy moved to South Korea.

They continued their late nights playing with friends from various international locales – from Australia and South Africa to the US, and the UK. It was there where they were first introduced to the concept of board game cafes. Board games, along with a great cup of tea or a glass of wine, became the common element that brought them and their global friends together. So upon their return to Canada, they wanted to bring that social experience back home. Four years later, in 2014, equipped with a personal collection of over 400 board games, Kellie and Randy opened the first Hexagon Cafe in Edmonton, Alberta.

Two years later, in 2016, Hexagon Cafe expanded to Calgary, Alberta.  With the continual rise of popularity in board games, they quickly outgrew their first location in Edmonton.  So in 2017, they packed up all the games and relocated 6 blocks down to their current – and bigger – location on Whyte Ave.

My family and I have been going here for years and enjoy the atmosphere, the help with game instructions, and service. The staff are able to help you learn a new board game in a few minutes, they clearly love what they do and it comes across. This is really important and removes a barrier to trying a game like Root, Galaxy Trucker, or Terraforming Mars with a lot of set up and rules. This place is great for a lot of different people. For a first date, which we often see, you have something to do and the chance to talk. For families, you can get a snack and try something with the kids without bringing something home that may never get used again. For groups of friends, this offers something other than going for drinks or dinner.

I've been to Hexagon since they first opened a few years ago - a few things have changed since there, but overall it's a super fun experience for everyone. I've found that parties of 4+ are the best for the games, but you can definitely have a date night or 3 people and still have a good time. They have great cafe drink options - coffees, lattes juices, and even a few ciders and beer now (yes please!). We had such a great experience with some of the games (especially Catan) that we actually went out and bought it for ourselves to play at home. This is a great hangout for friends, but if you have a big party or come during peak hours, I definitely recommend booking ahead or coming early!

First time coming here. Plan was to meet up with a group of friends (5 people). Was told I can't be seated until at least half my party is here. Been standing around for 20+ minutes while there are tons of open spots. A woman walked in and asked for a table. She was waiting for 2 other people to arrive. She was able to get seated. Apparently half your party is open to interpretation. 1 out of 3 gets a seat. 1 out of 5 stands around for 20-30min. Added a picture to show how empty the place is.

This is an amazing place to come with (smart) friends. You can come and enjoy from a wide selection of board and card games. You must buy something here though, keep that in mind. Some of the food is on the pricier side but I usually get an iced coffee. Their vegan almond tart is simply amazing. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for hours of fun

A cafe with a twist. Perfect for date night or night out with friends, Adventure comes in the form of boardgames and plenty of them. Some you know very well (aka scrabble) and some you've never heard of but get to try (aka Paranormal Detectives). And if there are games that you don't know how to play, the knowlegable staff can help you out. Yes the staff here is great! They are friendly, helpful, and will go out of their way to make you feel at home. It's also nice that they like to have little chats with you and wonder how they can improve. The food is great too! I can't get enough of that lemon tart. They can make a fortune on that alone. If you are there for a hot beverage, you will get exactly what you are looking for. They have great variety there. And the best part is, they sell alcohol there at night! Yahoo! Adults welcome! This is a perfect place to be for a good night out. A great hangout for those of us who like a little fun with our hot teas.

I absolutely love this place, super fun to hangout here. The ambience and atmosphere is great, staff are super friendly and always ready to offer help or advice on a game. Great selection of card games and board games. Their drinks are great, although the tart had a tad too much crust for my liking. I have come back a couple times already and never had a bad experience, would definitely recommend.

An excellent board game cafe at the centre of Kensignton with a massive selection of games to play with friends! The staff are very polite and knowledgeable in their catalog of games; and are very willing to help out with setting up and explaining games you might not have tried before; in addition to recommending games that you should try. As for the price per play per hour; It is very reasonable for the selection of games and atmosphere. The food and drinks offered as well are also quite stellar. Overall; an excellent experience with no complaints; will definitely be returning for more hours-long board game sessions with friends!
