My experience with GWL has not been a good one. In October of 2018 I was in a car accident. Ontario legislature allows car insurance companies to require that injured parties exhaust their private health insurance coverage for rehabilitation services before they have to contribute; this should be criminal but is not GWL's fault. My problem with GWL arose when I needed an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) to prove to my car insurance that I had indeed exhausted my private insurance. I called in and requested this document in early March and was instructed to navigate their website and generate a report from there. The agent on the phone seemed very in knowledgable and friendly. Unfortunately, she had mislead me and this is not what I needed. It took the car insurance company a little over a week to let me know that. Back to the phone I go to request the EOB again. This new agent seems even more competent than the first, apologies for the mishap and explains this is a routine request they complete often. He states that it may take 1-2 business days but that I will get the EOB emailed to me. I was fine with this. Fast forward to today, April 11th, and I still have not received the EOB. I called early this morning and a woman appologized and said she would send it right away. 5 hours later and I still did not have it so I call AGAIN and another agent says they will do it right away. This agent actually did; however is it a summary of my benefits similar to the first document I provided my car insurance with so I am not confident this issue is resolved quite yet. All this time has passed and I have not been able to attend treatment resulting in my condition worsening and progress I had been making being undone - Great West Life is the only party to blame for this delay in my treatment and I am extremely frustrated and disappointed by the whole process.

Customer response time moves at a snail's pace. Quick to take your money, MIA when you need to use their services. They asked me to update my father's medical condition for his disability benefits, they took months and months and we essentially accomplished nothing. To be honest, their business practices are highly suspect and the company almost seems built to frustrate the customer. I was warned that dealing with them can be highly discouraging and they confirmed that. Stay away from this company if you can help it.
