About Great Plains Recreational Facility

The Calgary Female Sport Development Association (CFSDA), formally the Fairview Women’s Hockey Arena Society (FWHAS) has a relatively short but successful history in arena operations in Calgary. CFSDA was incorporated as a not-for-profit in January 2008. Its membership consists of the Southern Alberta Women’s Hockey Association (SAWHA).

When awarded the Fairview Arena, a vision was identified for these organizations to partner in the delivery of arena services to the citizens of Calgary. Immediately, efforts began with identifying stakeholders and coming up with a plan of engagement and staffing the operation. In year two an ambitious capital development plan was put in place to update and improve the operations of the facility. In a short amount of time over 1.5 million dollars in capital upgrades, operational improvements and facility renovations were completed positioning the Fairview Arena as one of the most desirable arenas to play in with the City.

Up until the arena’s permanent closure in February of 2018 the Fairview Arena had established itself as the Home of SAWHA – Women’s Hockey. Despite the permanent closure of the Fairview Arena, CFSDA believes in the importance of providing places to play across the spectrum of the long-term athlete development model and values serving underrepresented groups within the City of Calgary.

Decent rink with two sheets of ice. It feels like it's in the middle of nowhere just due to being in an industrial area and next to the Big Rock Brewery.

Really great arena! Dressing rooms are spacious and CLEAN! Seating area is warm and views of the ice are floor to ceiling- no boards to look over. Lots of space for the little ones to run around too while siblings play. Will be nice once the cafe is finished

Quad arenas, which is nice. But, the viewing area is not spectator friendly as you can't see through the glass into the corners. Also, there is no concession at all which isn't convenient.

A fantastic rink! The ice is top notch and there are two arenas. The dressing rooms are kept very clean too.

The good: spacious dressing rooms, showers, and stick storage. Great idea to keep fans sequestered in one area away from the ice surface. The Bad: cementing in the end boards. What the Heck???? The architect should be sued and this issue rectified as this is dangerous. The Brita bottle filling station requires you arrive an hour before your game. Cannot a tap be found in the dressing room? The ice? the Ice is not great.

The rink is fairly decent (little hard to find you're way around to start) the dressing rooms were spacious with lots of storage. But the rink was unbearablely warm it was uncomfortable to play on such a warm rink (during winter) and the water bottle filler was TERRIBLE I spent 5 minutes filling up a standard gatorade bottle
