About Gilbertson's Maple Products

Our Founder, Bernt Gilbertson, arrived on St Joseph Island from Norway as a young boy. Bernt married a local girl, Rose Hawdon, and together they built a life and raised a family.

In 1936 Bernt decided to try his hand at producing Maple Syrup. It wasn’t long until he saw an opportunity to expand and market his product. He began, what is today known as, Gilbertson’s Maple Products.

As the market grew so did the syrup production. Bernt soon began to expand and include his sons, Don, Rick and Greg as part of the team.

As time passed Bernt moved on to become a local MPP(Member of Provincial Parliament) and Don took over the business continuing to work with his brothers.

Over time the brothers advanced the use of technology in the business by adapting innovating methods and improving materials to increase productivity.

Change moved from buckets to pipeline, metal spiles to plastic, above ground mainline to underground, gravity flow to vacuum systems, thermometers to refractometers, gravity filtering to a pressurized filter press and wood boiling to steam.

Today, Don’s sons, Calvin and Brent continue the family tradition of heading to the sugar bush in early spring to capture the sweet sap flowing from the maple tree as a sure sign that spring is arriving.

Calvin and Brent have continued to expand and innovate, making Gilbertson’s Maple Products one of the largest syrup producers in Ontario.

Poised at the doorstep of change is the fourth generation of Gilbertson’s, preparing to continue the family tradition of fine syrup making.

The Gilbertson family invites you to visit our syrup making operation and pancake house during syrup season for a taste of family hospitality and good food. (Restaurant closed for 2022)

Excellent, friendly and quick service. The food and coffee are delicious. It's definitely worth the drive from the Sault and at times the wait. We try and make it a family tradition to go every year. You should to.

Nice place to visit with out of town guests ... the breakfast menu is limited to maple syrup friendly foods for obvious reasons. .. the bottomless coffee and tea is a nice add ... we went there for about 9am on a Saturday and the wait was about 30 minutes which is not unreasonable considering how small the dining area is ... the staff are pleasant and do not try to give you the bums rush regardless of the wait list. Will certainly try to go again before maple season ends.

Great food, especially the fluffy giant pancakes. The staff are so friendly. They enjoy explaining how the maple syrup is made. I look forward to going back again. I was happy to be able to take my dad and grandma to the island for the first time.

A nice family run business, open only during sap running season. Very busy on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. I recommend going during the week to avoid long waits. The restaurant is quite nicely decorated and there is a store that sells maple syrup products and other interesting items. The menu is a bit limited ( pancakes, french toast, waffles, bacon, sausage) but very tasty.

We were at the restaurant, sugar shack yesterday to buy some maple syrup. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We bought some syrup and a few other items. I purchased the baked bean recipe bag for 10.95. I prepared the beans for the next day to cook. The beans were no good. They were to old and discolored. Most of them were soft and didn't smell right. They shouldn't be selling old products for that price. The spice packet was hard as a rock. You would think that the ingredients would be fresh at that price and not a year or more old. Shame on you ?. Definitely don't buy some of the products. Ask how old it is. Will never buy that again. I spoke with a young lady from Gilbrtsons and she explained the situation with me. She was extremely nice and apologetic for the mishap. She rectified the problem and I am more than satisfied with her treatment of the situation. In all fairness she went above and beyond to make things right. I will definitely return and not hesitate to purchase anything from them in the future.

My friend and I rode our bikes out for opening day. I've wanted to do that for years. Great food and good service. Nice fire to warm up by before heading back out in the cold.

Not being from the Soo I've never had the Gilbertsons experience and it was totally worth the drive! It was not only fun but I got to the learn about the history and process of it all.
