Moist? You could say that. Wet? It was raining, so yes. Soggy? See above. Watertight shoes are a must here (January), it was wetter than an anchor at the bottom of the ocean. There is a little bit of elevation, so shoes with grip are also needed since wet dirt makes mud which becomes slippery... Then there's the roots, the boardwalk, all of which are slippery. Basically this a typical north island walk where mother nature is trying her hardest to make you faceplant/wipe out/get soaked to the bone/... The views are nice, though...

This is a 4 km long trail from Highway #19, just before Bear Cove, to a point near to Storey's Beach. The trail surface may be rocky (large gravel), marshy or boardwalk. There are some fairly good ascents and descents as well as areas of unstable footing. This trail is not for everyone. Depending on weather, allow an hour to 90 minutes, one-way. The forest area varies along the trail. You will see evidence of past logging activities and the related regrowth. You pass by a small lake on boardwalk with a small bench where you can sit and enjoy the serenity. Although the signage warns of this being an unmaintained trail, we found it to be in very good repair.
