How to Know You're Experiencing Trauma and Recovery Options

Written by Monique Roy, Registered Social Worker (RSW), Clinical Therapist

When people hear the word trauma, many think of it as a result of a big and scary event. When in fact trauma may be big or small, and based on a single event or many experiences over time. My name is Monique Roy and I am a social worker and clinical therapist at Food to Fit. In this post I’m going to discuss what trauma is exactly, what happens in your nervous system when you experience a traumatic event, symptoms of trauma, and how to help resolve trauma.

What is Trauma?

Although trauma can be defined in many different ways and there are various types, in essence, trauma is a breach in a person’s nervous system (NS). Trauma happens when the ability to choose was taken away. Trauma can show up in the form of sudden stress from a perceived life-threat or as the end result of additive stress.

When a person experiences a traumatic event, the NS goes into either fight, flight or freeze (a NS survival response). People have the ability to make sense of their experiences by using their words and their thoughts. However, this process does not allow the NS survival response to complete itself, and this in turn causes trauma symptoms.

What are Symptoms of Trauma?

Trauma symptoms may include any of the following:

  • Anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Depression
  • Frequent crying
  • Sleeping and eating changes or difficulties
  • Flashbacks
  • Hypervigilance (ie. being “on guard” at all times)
  • Exaggerated emotional and startle responses
  • Hyperactivity
  • Extreme sensitivity to light and sound
  • Nightmares and night terrors
  • Abrupt mood swings (e.g. rage reactions or temper tantrums)
  • Shame and reduced ability to deal with stress.

Overall, trauma separates the different parts in a person’s internal system to the point where they are unable to be in the here and now.

How Does One Cope and Heal From Trauma?

There are many strategies that can support someone through trauma, including: connecting with others, reducing stress, meditation, movement, and/or therapy with a trauma specialist. One approach used by therapists is called Somatic Experiencing (SE).

Somatic Experiencing is the process of healing trauma through accessing your NS and focusing on body sensations rather that thoughts and memories. It offers a gentle approach to help manage your sense of safety through your own physiology. I like to describe SE as an invitation to slow down and renegotiate your basic survival mechanisms by connecting to your environment through your body sensations. This can help to normalize the symptoms of trauma and offer a natural way to resolve internal activation. In other words, you may release pent up trauma-related energy through shaking, crying, or other forms of physical release. This helps to relax and regulate the NS and move away from the fight, flight, and freeze responses.

If you feel you're struggling with the effects of trauma, you don't have to do it alone. If you are wondering how SE can help, find out more about me and my approach to care here. You deserve to live a meaningful and happy life.

Sydney has been a monumental help to rewriting how I think and interact with food. After numerous negative experiences with lists of eat this and don't eat that, it continued to be refreshing to work with someone that is helping me learn how to make these choices for myself and embrace intuitive eating. Few professionals have the humility to say "I don't know", and even fewer who will do the work to find out and get back to you in a timely manner. Sydney continues to be helpful in working my way through Severe life-threatening Allergies, IBS symptoms, over eating, and more. I am thankful to continue to work with her and have no doubt that many will benefit from doing the same. Thanks Sydney!

Sydney is amazing at what she does! She is so caring and really listens to your issues. She gave me so much great insight into my eating habits and has been working very hard at helping me become healthier without falling into diet culture. I have been a yo-yo dieter my whole life and am beginning to see the light at the end of the diet tunnel! She has been working with me prenatal to set me up for a healthy pregnancy and to be a great role model for my little babe.

Sydney is a great dietitian and I loved working with her. I would highly recommend her to anyone. She is very knowledgeable and goes above and beyond to answer all questions asked. Sydney is easy to talk to and made me feel very comfortable. Sydney and I discussed my relationship to food and how that relationship has impacted my beliefs around what I eat and diet culture. Sydney recommend personal goals that complimented my lifestyle and she provided me with the proper resources to help me achieve the set goals. I can tell that Sydney is so passionate about helping her clients and will do anything she can to assist you on your journey. That alone is a great enough reason to go see her!!

I worked extensively with Sydney over the past handful of months (and Dayna remotely before Sydney started working in Regina) and am so very thankful for their able assistance. Food and thoughts about food (and body image) were all consuming before I worked with Sydney (and Dayna). I spent much time working with therapists and other dieticians to work through these things with little success before coming to Food to Fit. Sydney was so helpful to me. She was so very empathetic, always heard me, and clearly prepared in advance of our meeting, and even carefully read the reflections that I would email her from my assigned β€œhomework” in advance of our sessions. It was so nice to work with someone that understood and appreciated the struggles I’ve had with various forms of disordered eating over the years. Sydney also broke down strategies and lessons in a practical way that helped me move forward. I feel so much freer, having finally let go of calorie counting and other less than helpful behaviours. That felt impossible for a long time. I am so thankful to Sydney and Dayna for their support.

I was followed by Jacqueline Stickel and she was amazing. She listened to my concerns and then came back with suggestions for me. We even got into the psychology of eating and lifestyle changes. That was an unexpected benefit of the session besides the practical diet advice.
