About Federal Metals

For Calgarians, By Calgarians

Federal Metals was started in 1950 by our founder, Herb Kraatz. It was a modest operation back then, with Herb picking up scrap metal from various shops and construction sites around the city before he would sort it and sell it.

As the years wore on and the business grew, Herb’s son Marvin Kraatz took over the company and oversaw Federal Metal’s operations and growth. In 1985, we moved the business to the 12-acre yard it sits on today. Not long after, in 2008, Marvin’s daughter Leslie took over the family business alongside our co-owner Dan Klufas.

They sell steel. Prices are good. What more do you want? It would be awesome to have some alloy or high carbon steel (maybe they do i just didn't see it) but still a great place.

Federal Metals probably has the best prices for buying steel in Calgary, the guys in the steel tent are also great at helping you out. I've never had steel cut here and usually get stuff in 12ft lengths, but it looks like they can cut the steel too. Overall a great place to buy from.

Very disappointed at the customer service in the office. I called in and told them what I had before I brought it in and they gave me a price for heavy metal. When I got there, the office tried to direct me to the light metal pile, but one of the yard employees looked at my load and directed me to the heavy pile instead. After I dumped, they paid me $50/ton less than they had quoted me. I questioned why and they said β€œrebar is a pain to work with” even though I told them I was bringing rebar before I drove in to the city. I used to take all my scrap there because it was convenient but now I’ll go out of my way to go somewhere else. I also left feedback on their website but no one even bothered to follow up with me. Bottom line, haul your scrap somewhere else where they pay what they say. Shady.

Incredible service and the best prices in town for mild steel. Never met warehouse workers as friendly as these guys. Just wish they would stock some "specialty" steels like (4140, 01, etc.) But if you're looking for mild steel in Calgary there is simply no point looking anywhere else than Federal Metals. Just to give you an idea of how good their prices are I just paid $0.92 per foot for 1/4" x 1" flat bar. The next best price in Calgary I could find was $3.50 per foot. Absolutely unbeatable prices.

Fair and Friendly! Even though my haul was small potatoes relative to the big contractors, the folks at Federal Metals treated me very well.. especially for a first-timer. I received a fair price for my materials (although I think I will start stripping all of my wire as copper is doing very well at the time of this writing). Thanks for the positive experience!

Guys are absolute scabs. Took a load of steel roofing to recon on Monday and got $240.00. Took a bigger load to these clowns and got $53.20. Then I call the office a half hour after I left and the guy tells me there $170.00 a ton and not $70.00. Liars. Don’t waste your time and go to any other recycler.
