About Expatasia LTD.
Joel Matthews
Joel Matthews is the co Chef/owner of expatasia. I was born in Edmonton back in 86 but shortly after moved to Australia with my parents and older sister Michelle. Dad was a chef with Hilton hotel and eventually transferred to Indonesia spending the majority of our time in Bali where I grew up.
I was never really into the whole cooking idea, although I liked cooking at home I didn’t think it would ever be a career for me. I dabbled in a few different “careers” from landscaping, working at nightclubs and restaurants but only in the front of house I was never interested in the kitchen side of things. It was only till I moved back to Bali where I got my first taste of a real kitchen with Gourmet cafΓ© and the Alila villas in Ubud and Uluwatu. I liked the hustle and bustle of the kitchens and was beginning to think I had finally found what I wanted to do for my career. I moved to Melbourne Australia with my girlfriend which is where I really fell in love with cooking and the overall kitchen life. I worked at THE SMITH which was an Asian fusion restaurant under Head Chef Brad Simpson and Executive Chef Micheal Lambie from there I knew that Asian food was what I was meant to be cooking.
From Melbourne I came back to Calgary and started working for Anju under Chef Roy Oh. Then 2.5 years later my father and I are ready to take the plunge and do something for ourselves together, expatasia is where we are starting.

β β β β β The best authentic Singapore glass noodles with crispy pork belly. I havenβt eaten pork for two years as part of my change of diet but when I saw those deliciously well prepared pork belly, brought back a lot of good memories from Asia that I have to try it. And you guys did not disappoint. The glass noodles taste so delicious especially when itβs spicy. A must try. Please try expatasia when you visit Avenida. The best in town.

β β β β β No matter what, i walk slower when I pass by Expat Asia just to get a glimpse of what theyβre serving up. Their crispy roast pork belly is like crack ? with very light and crispy skin. Their laksa is also a super comforting, delicious option. Chef Jeff and the other staff are super nice and friendly. The favours indeed remind me of the food I had abroad in areas of Asia.

β β β β β Ate here today and tried the pork belly. I am doing keto right now and he said the pork belly with glass noodles would be keto friendly. I will see if I am still in ketosis tomorrow.
I found the meat very tasty and well prepared. The crispy side was delightfully crunchy. If I had a crunchy giant bowl full... I would not be able to leave it alone. The glass noodles were on the greasy side but still tasty. The food I would give a strong 4 stars and with a salad I could likely make it a 5.
I did find the proportion to be small for the price (>$18). This is a low 3 so on balance for my first meal I have ranked a 3. Fortunately my diet made me not care. I felt that a good salad with the small portions would of made it a well balanced meal.
Good building to head into to try a wide variety of foods.
I would love to review the entire menu but alas... not until my diet is done.

β β β β β I went out of my comfort zone trying something new and Iβm so glad I did! My boyfriend and I shared the Crack & Cauli ($18) which is pork belly and fried cauliflower on rice. I would say it was big enough for two people with a small appetite. I couldnβt have eaten it all by myself. Anywayβ¦It was AMAZING. the cauliflower was SO crispy and flavourful. The spicy mayo on it was delicious. The pork belly was deliciously flavoured and I loved the crispy skin on it. I was extremely impressed and will be returning soon!
