The Dental Implant That Restored My Smile I have framed my trusty chrome denture and hung it on my wall as a reminder of a bygone technology. In its place I have a truly modern dental implant with a beautiful crown which is as close to the real thing as I'll ever see. Like my old denture, this new implant is the best of its kind: well designed, well placed, secure, functional, realistic and attractive. My new tooth flatters me with its natural good looks. Most people won't even know its there. Behind what is visible to the eye is a team of people – Dr. John Keyes (the one who places the implant); Dr. Patrick Finnigan (the one who chooses the surgeon and places the crown); and, artisans at the dental lab (the ones who create realism in the finished crown with authentic contours and other artistic touches) – all of whom have honed their craft to a level approaching perfection. Other members of the team, trained dental assistants with various necessary skills, deserve credit too; without these people, dentists would have a tough time getting the results we take for granted. An implant-and-crown involves many small steps, each one easy to tolerate. In my experience the initial procedure, involving 3-D imaging, guided drilling and precision placement of the implant, was smooth and pain-free, partly because the incision is very small and the anesthetic very effective, and partly because the surgeon – well trained and up-to-date – really does know what he is doing. And the final procedure, involving dental impressions, and decisions relating to the shape and color of the crown was a breeze. All in all, a happy adventure. I have waited six decades for this moment and I am glad I did.
