About Cornerstone Counselling

Cornerstone Counselling was born in the basement of Bonnie Doon Baptist Church of Edmonton in 1977. It was founded by Reverend Dr. Ernest Runions and Dr. Doug Spinney who had a vision for a Christian counselling agency that could help people during life’s most difficult moments. They believed that by providing affordable and professional mental health care, people would heal and have better lifelong outcomes.

When people in the community learned that subsidized counselling services were available in the church, they started calling to ask if they too could receive this valuable help. Our founders believed that everyone was worthy of love and acceptance, so they opened their doors to the community. Soon, the little counselling office was filled to capacity. It was quickly realized that they had tapped into a deep community need. They moved the counselling office out of the church and established it as an independent charity with a mission to serve the whole community by providing faith-based and secular counselling. Thanks to these early visionaries, Cornerstone has thrived and is continuing to help the next generation with compassionate mental health care.

Today, Cornerstone is one of the largest not-for-profit providers of subsidized counselling, psycho-educational workshops, and psychotherapy training in the Edmonton area. We serve the entire community from children as young as four years old to seniors and offer fee subsidies from our Way to Wellness Fund. Over the years, we estimate that we have helped approximately 85,000 people improve their lives and find their way to wellness.

Although I am pleased that this company offers a sliding scale rate for lower income families, I don't think the full extent of their policy is fair. In the middle of a pandemic, when the economy is crashing and people are struggling just to buy groceries, a company should not be considering government assistance payments as a source of reliable income for calculating rates. Those government payments are temporary, and for some people, it's all they have. Of course I do understand that they are a business and need to turn a profit to continue operating. However, I don't know a single person who can afford $200 for therapy right now, but every single person I know NEEDS therapy right now. I gave 4 stars because I greatly appreciate that their staff is friendly, reliable, and they work quickly to get meetings scheduled. :)

I thoroughly enjoyed my summer/student job at Cornerstone Counselling. After working at Cornerstone, I truly grew to admire the impact counseling has on others' lives. I learned a lot from the variety of projects that were provided to me and believe they will be beneficial for my future career aspirations. The staff were very friendly, professional and done a great job at communicating remotely. I would highly recommend Cornerstone to potential clients seeking therapy and candidates for employment.

I don't know that I've ever posted a negative review on Google prior to this, and I'm sad to feel compelled to do so now, especially with respect to a psychology practice, as I'm a huge proponent of therapy. I would preface by saying that my review is not of *all* of Cornerstone's Psychologists, only the specific Provisional Psychologist I met with, as well as the Administration Staff. I was assigned to a Provisional Psychologist as I was a student and this option more affordable. Due to several recent events in my life, I was in really bad shape, and perhaps I didn't communicate clear enough to the Administration Staff just how desperate I was feeling, and that maybe a provisional student psychologist wasn't appropriate given my circumstances. Having been diagnosed over 10 years ago as a major depressive, I have lots of experience with psychologists, so I feel like I have adequate knowledge and experience to post a fair review. I have never had such a poor session with a psychologist. Ever. This girl asked probing and painful questions - which is completely fair. But that was literally it - She offered no solace, support, strategies or coping mechanisms, nor did she offer any kind of plan for the future for us to conquer these issues. She questioned me for an hour, from which I was in tears, and then sent me on my way. During the entirety of the appointment, the largest sentence she strung together was, "That must be hard for you". I honestly left much worse off than I went in. I didn't leave feeling optimistic or supported. But it gets better - Then perhaps a month later, I received an email asking me to review my experience and fill out a survey online, so I did, because it really sucked. The last question of the survey was something like "Would you be willing to be contacted regarding your experience?" and I clicked "Yes", why not. The next day, a member of the Administration Staff called me because she said I had clicked in the survey that I wanted to be contacted, and so she was calling to ask what I wanted to be contacted about. I explained that no - it asked if I was *willing* to be contacted regarding my survey. So after saying in this survey how I'd left feeling worse, her response was basically "Ok, well if you don't need anything, then have a nice day". It honestly made me even more angry - it was total indifference, even AFTER I had told them how terrible my experience had been. 0/5 stars. :-/

I am truly thankful for my experience with cornerstone counselling with the therapist and receptionist (helpful, professional and friendly). I was in hopeless and very heavy place - the journey goes on at different levels and I am really thankful for the sessions, how I was able to gain tools and work through it. Thank you so much for being there.

I communicated with Amanda as she was our community partner through a group project for school. Communicating with Amanda was very easy as she was very open to our ideas. Upon meeting we were able to present what we had at that time and she was very encouraging. She was also very accommodating as she was able to meet whenever we proposed. Overall, it was a great experience and I hope I am able to work with Amanda again in the future.

Amanda was wonderful to work with! She helped ease our worries from the first time we met with her, on the first day of this semester, when we had no clue about the project we were doing for Cornerstone Counselling. She treated us as colleagues and I did not recognize any uneven power dynamics. Unfortunately, due to Covid, we were unable to schedule a tour of Cornerstone Counselling or meet Amanda in person, as we had hoped to, however I am thankful for the informal chit-chat we did have when meeting with her virtually. She was very empathetic to our situation as students during a global pandemic, and she made made us feel like valuable contributors/consultants to Cornerstone Counselling!
