About Columbia Outdoor School

Columbia Outdoor School is a non-profit registered charity that owns and operates the Blue Lake Camp, an outdoor education centre located in the Columbia Basin of British Columbia.

The Society provides educational programming on recreation outdoor skill development, sustainability, environment, and leadership. The Centre provides overnight camping experiences and experiential programming to youth. Youth attending the camp gain confidence, independence, critical thinking skills and opportunities to explore the natural environment.

In addition, Blue Lake provides rental opportunities to families, small and large groups, and organizations. Rental revenues help offset the cost of our educational programming for youth.

Blue Lake has been in operation since 1977 and has a long history of developing quality environmental education programs for youth. As the largest and most organized youth focused outdoor education organization in the Columbia Basin, Blue Lake is well equipped to develop and run place based and outdoor experiential programs.

I'm so pleased with our experience at the day camp in Kimberley. Thank you to Blue Lake and the Columbia Outdoor School for adapting and providing an option for working parents during the pandemic. Our daughter had so much fun with "Boots' and "Glitch". Highly recommend!

My family just spent 4 days at the Blue Lake Family Camp (their response to covid-19). It was incredible! We didn't want to leave. My 8 year old son w(has been to Disneyland, Mexico, Dr. Seuss cruise ship, etc) said it was the best time of his life! There was a great balance between provided programing (treasure hunt, canoe lesson, etc) and free time. They catered to our specific dietary requirements and amazingly I didn't get glutened/sick even once! Thank you to Bubbles and Fozzi for an amazing time ?

We just had our Wedding at Blue Lake. It was amazing. We had our own personal lake and forrest to ourselves and our guests. At first we where going to do some of the catering ourselves but decided against it. The Chef there was awsome and so accommodating. Fozzy and Mama bear where so warm and welcoming. They took care of everything! Pefect for a weekend to disconnect and enjoy our family. Tricia in the office was so great to deal with and answered all of our questions and always took time out for a quick phone call. I would highly recommend having a wedding or event there!

Working here was fun sometimes, however the work environment was toxic and had a large clique and if you were not part of this group you were excluded and it was not a fun experience. I used to love coming here as a child and was very excited when I got the job, however these expectations of a healthy work environment last as I was met with the true reality of this toxic work environment. EDIT: First, this actually was not my first full time job and second : I never received an invite to this staff committee that you described. I used to love going to camp here but this work environment is not sustainable for a good mental health.

As a previous camper and volunteer Blue Lake has truly been a place where people can come and be themselves. There are many activities that are designed to be both fun and educational for campers. Allowing them to come into contact with nature and understand better the many forests and natural environments in British Columbia. Overall Blue Lake is certainly an organization that prides themselves on excellence with high standards of childcare and education and an awesome staff that takes pride in their work.

As a former camper and Counsellor at Blue Lake I can confirm that this place is truly magical. Blue Lake has improved tremendously since I was a camper, both in facility and in staff. Staff go through a week long training program to help them learn all of the skills necessary to become a worker with youth. As another person has mentioned, there are cliques at blue lake. Cliques are to be expected as 95% of the staff are teenagers. Most of the staff will live together at camps for 7 weeks. It is very easy to make connections and friends when you spend that long together. Of course someone who joins part way through won’t immediately be a part of the group but after a few days you get accepted. I have spent 3 summers as a counsellor for Blue lake and they have been the best summers of my life. Blue Lake and Columbia Outdoor School is an AMAZING workplace for teens that are starting out a career. Blue lake has formed an committee dedicated to making Camp a safer and more inclusive place to work. I can confirm that BLC is actively listening to their employees and are making a ton of improvements to make camp better.
