About Cohen's Beer Republic

Story of Morris Cohen:

The legendary Morris Cohen accumulated many titles over his lifetime: Adventurer, Gangster, Protector, Soldier of fortune, Card Shark, Con man, General, and "Charlatan-with-a-heart". Born in England in 1887, a youthful Cohen was constantly making trouble on the streets of East End London (the same years and in the same neighbourhood that Jack the Ripper was terrorizing London). At 18, in 1905, he was sent to Western Canada by his family for a fresh start and hopefully reform. For a short time, he settled in Riversdale. Here, he frequented "The Alberta Café", a Chinese restaurant located at the corner of our property.

One day he came to the aid of the owner, Mah Sam, who was being robbed. Cohen's training in the alleyways of London came in handy, and he knocked out the thief and tossed him out into the street. Such an act was unheard of at the time, as few white men ever came to the aid of the Chinese. As a result, the Chinese welcomed Cohen into their fold and eventually invited him to China where he joined Sun Yat-sen's anti-Manchu organization. As Sun Yat-sen's bodyguard, Cohen helped establish the first Republic of China, upsetting almost 300 years of rule by the Qing Dynasty.

After being nicked by a bullet on his shooting arm during a battle in China, Cohen started carrying two guns and became proficient shooting with both hands, eventually earning the nickname, "Two-Gun Cohen". He used his training as a soldier with the "Canadian Railway Troops" in WWI to train Sun's army, and rose to the rank of General. He went on to fight for the Chinese against Japan in WWII. Later in life he became an ambassador between China and the UK, Canada, and United States. He died in 1970.

My boyfriend and I got takeout. First time trying it, I ordered the butter chicken and dill pickle fries. We were both disappointed by the lack of creativity with the fries. It's just salted fries and then special dill pickle dip ?‍♀️. I was however very impressed with the presentation of the butter chicken. When numbers go down, I'd like to see Cohen's in person!

The atmosphere here was wonderful. The staff were friendly and accommodating, especially since we hadn't booked and needed a table for 6 people on a Saturday night. They made a plan and gave us nothing but great service. The food was amazing, and they have a gluten free bun replacement for all burgers (woohooo ?). Unfortunately a few of the beers and food items our group wanted were out of stock, but that happens with popular items so no fault there. We will be back!!

Our waiter opened their dog friendly patio for us. That was a good sign. My feature burger with 5 oz patty and Gruyère cheese was done just right and very tasty and approved by our dog. The churros were surprisingly good. Warm, crunch on the outside, soft on the inside with just a hint of chili and excellent with a after lunch coffee. Eat here!

Fantastic resturant with amazing staff made for a one-of-a-kind experience! I booked a reservation here for my brother-in-law's bachelor party. We were kindly greeted and served by one of the best servers I have ever had (Thomas). He was knowledgeable, friendly, and helped us find some fun drinks for the group. The drink menu has a few bartenders choice items which were a lot of fun and they were very helpful in tailoring it to your preferences. The food was varied and ended up being absolutely delicious. I had the kimchi pork belly which was an orchestra of phenomenal flavours all packed into one dish. The rest of our table got the nachos and other appetizers which were all fantastic. We had a great time and will make this restaurant one of our regular spots for dinner!

Loved the decorations and the layout. The backroom is where we had a small hangout. Food is decent. Overall a good place to have a good time with your people.

Really amazed. We hadn't booked on a weekend for a large table, they were more than willing to do whatever they could to accommodate us. The food is incredible, far more sophisticated than you'd expect from a bar. Service was fantastic, huge drinks menu. High recommended
