City Adult Learning Center

I find it an insult to me that I basically have to repeat grade 9 and 10 just to upgrade my course. CALC is the worst school to do adult school. The person that was marking my test basically laughed at me because I failed my science assessment. I mean I haven't taken science since grade 10 (2012) what do you expect. Why did you guys have to insult me like that and now you're not replying to my emails??

C.A.L.C - is the best adult education facility in Toronto; from The Guidance office through to the Main office. The speed of service is great. A few simple tests and before you know it, your in a class room learning. Education and learning is a life long process, but it is up to the individual to further their own endeavors. The teaching staff are knowledgeable, educated individuals that treat you like a person and not like a number. Most importantly, you can obtain credit courses for post secondary education in a timely manner. This institution allows people from all walks of life to feel accepted and part of the team. Ah, where do I start about this school? To be honest, I feel somewhat relieved after reading some of the bad comments about this school, particularly about the teachers. Until today, I thought I was being too sensitive, or even crazy for feeling that I was being bullied by the teachers at City Adult Learning Centre. Since I started going here on September, my mental health has deteriorated. I have felt depressed, often coming home by the end of the day, crying and feeling discouraged because of the treatment of my teachers towards me. For a school that claims to promote mental health awareness, I am quite shocked and appalled by the lack of knowledge of the teachers and staff about the severe repercussions of their mistreatment of students. Or perhaps they do know the repercussions and do not care. In just a couple of months, I have seen not only me, but my other classmates being ridiculed in front of class for asking simple questions about the lessons. I totally understand why many students chose to drop out. Not all the classes are challenging but many of them are poorly planned and hence are hard to follow. One of my teachers attributed this to the fact that there was not enough time provided by the school to prepare the lessons in advance. I found myself correcting my teachers many times for their errors (in a polite way of course), but it only led to me being ostracized. I’ve had to do so much self reflection over these past couple of months, thinking there was something wrong with me for my teachers to treat me this way. It did not make sense to me because I was getting excellent grades and was always eager to learn. But it was because of my teachers at CALC. I hope my review helped another student. It did help me cope when I read the other comments. I would like it even more if some of the staff read this so they can be aware of their actions.

I had only one or two good teachers. Other teachers talk down to students and put them down when they were trying. Which is really sad to see. When you attend here you might feel discouraged, I've seen a lot of people who have gotten depressed and dropped out of school after attending here. I wish there was a good adult school for people to go to and actually feel like they can do well. The teachers, principle, and vice principle need to understand is most people who attend adult are looking for another chance in life to have a better future. Instead of discouraging students from trying, try to encourage them. I do agree with a lot of people on here, they do put you in a lower grade (even if you have taken that level in high school before). You might end up having to go here because a lot of the other schools don't have the same courses, as they do here. If you do decide to go here, the best thing to do is blend in with the crowd and do the best you could do. Try to get out fast as you can because if you do become a victim of being bullied by the people who work here, it can get hard to finish. Also don't rely on the teacher when it comes to tests because on tests they won’t fully say what is really on the test, this could really mess you up. If a teacher is wrong about something they said in a discussion, sometimes it’s best not to correct them because they use that against you and make the rest of the time they have you the worst. I have noticed that the people who keep to themselves are treated better than those who have friends in the class or seem confident in themselves. If you are born in Canada or just have been in school here they may treat you worse than any other students. Sometimes if you are a female and you like to look good…some of the female teachers may give you dirty looks…which i find immature. Pretty much don’t stand out, don’t participate too much, try to study alone. Sounds pretty depressing...I’ve seen it happen to many of my friends. Other cons: - If you dress differently, a lot of students may laugh at you (it’s not the school’s fault, it’s something to keep in mind) - Another point about some teachers and the vice principle they don't really care about your success or anything really. It’s not always something you see in their behaviour because they might just tell you that to your face Another point about the teachers and the vice principle, they are very immature, if you can’t tell already from my review. you can’t really make a complaint about a teacher whether their teaching is bad or the way they treat you - Favouritism is much worse at this school than any other school I've been to. Some teacher will just boost some of the students mark if they really like you like give extra marks. While the other students they might drop your mark or ask you not to participate in class. Pros: - They have good cafeteria food, the price ranges from about $6 and lower (I think so) - You do meet a lot of amazing students - There are clubs you can join like lgbtq club, business club, yoga, i think they have sports clubs… They have co-op - They have elevators - They have many different courses (business courses, accounting, culinary..) there are a few good teachers which is nice (very little though) the way to make a change is to speak in volume, when a group of students say there is a problem that’s how you can make a change. The only problem with this is a lot people are afraid to speak up because they are worried about their future and just want to get out adult school. The more student get together, the more attention it will get like a protest. Some other info about this school: - Each course goes by fast like about 2 months and half I hope you find this review helpful.

Calc is unique academy in Toronto which provide variety training and courses to new comers free of charge . The best and professional teachers, especially Stephany the genius lady from history class .

In 1997-98 I was a night student at City Adult Learning Center and they have some very good teachers; one of them was Mr. R. Blake a black male.

So great here! I'm learning so much ,and I am glad! The teachers,and staff are truly the best ,and it's a good community of all the students!! Looking forward! Moving forward!!??
