Amy and Alex are the epitome of top talent for photography and cinematography. This dynamic duo helped our team at Employ to Empower craft beautiful videos that helped give residents of the Downtown Eastside (DTES), known as one of the top five poorest postal codes), a platform to share their story through cinematography. With their creative photography and cinematography, they captured the strength and resilience of emerging entrepreneurs, thus challenging the stigmas around the DTES community. Unlike most cinematographers, Amy and Alex bring a compassionate, wholehearted approach where they invest time to get to know the organization and the people whom they are filming before they even turn on the camera. For context, Employ to Empower’s mandate is to challenge the stigma of the Downtown Eastside (DTES) — we do this by hosting experiential events that share stories through a lens of strength and resilience. Last year, we hosted the Cardboard Project, where Deirdre and Sage, both Employ to Empower entrepreneurs and residents in the DTES, shared their stories in a dark interactive room. At the time we were looking for a local, wholehearted and talented organization to help us capture this experience to share with the broader community. When we shared this with Cillema, they stepped up with no hesitation and helped us create beautiful videos that highlighted their resilience. From the bottom of our hearts, Amy and Alex have helped make a meaningful impact on the lives of the entrepreneurs in our program by giving them a voice through their beautiful cinematography.
