About Calgary Performing Arts Festival

As Executive Director of the Calgary Performing Arts Festival, Young-Mi brings an array of essential skills and strategic direction. Her leadership experience and background in classical music performance make her an indispensable leader for the organization.

Growing up in Winnipeg, she participated in the Manitoba Music Festival and has performed across North America and Europe, including Carnegie Hall in New York. Young-Mi graduated with a BA in Music Performance (violin major, piano minor) from Southern College in TN and was accepted into a Masters program at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. Due to a severe wrist injury, her musical days were cut short. She then made the shift into non-profit management.

Young-Mi has held senior roles with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Okanagan Symphony Orchestra and the Calgary Philharmonic orchestra and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, Prairies Region.

When she is not at work, Young-Mi participates in marathons and has recently completed a half ironman triathlon.

Still haven’t received a refund. Ridiculous that this all could not have just been postponed and then no refunds would be required !!!! I took a chance on participating in CPAF for the first time in years and wow was that a huge mistake. I’m now out more than $100 with not a lot of hope to ever see it again until β€œearly fall”. VERY unprofessional.

If your child loves music, band, spoken word, musical theatre, drama... this annual adjudicated festival is world class and a must for confidence building!

This used to be a great festival, well organized, professionally prepared, affordable. Then it stopped being run by a small group of dedicated people under Kiwanis club patronage, and a new team took over. Since then, everything has gone downhill: the fees-up, the schedule- not available until the last moment, full of factual and spelling mistakes, with badly calculated performance times and overlapping classes; the scholarships-few and far between, often cut in half to be spread amongst more performers; the winners concert- badly organized, without the great MC Jonathan Love, and boring. But what happened this year really takes the cake: having collected the fees from participants and then cancelling the whole event due to Covid, the festival first flatly refused any refunds, and later promised partial ones in the fall. It is the end of October, and no refunds have been sent, no updates or explanations given. I would like to point out that , by the festival's own admission, venue and adjudicator costs were fully refunded to them, and that cost was $200,000. They raised $500,000 from registration fees and donations, and their operational costs are $300,000! Full time staff and office alone cost $258,000! Why do they need full time staff for the whole year to prepare a three week event? Why are the rent and operational costs so high? What do these employees do? - it does not seem like there even will be a festival next year ! Why have we not been refunded or given the courtesy of an explanation? Sorry for ranting, but I have really had it with this organization. I hope they get audited and disbanded.

How DARE they organise another sham festival? They have yet to return the fees they STOLE from the last festival two years ago. We paid the fees and wrote to them about refunds since 2020. Their reply was 'we are working to provide full refunds to all who requested' but till to date there has been NONE despite writing to them many times. The festival used to be good until this new management so I would AVOID this festival at all costs because its a money grab if anything happens. AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!
