About Big Fish & Open Range

Big Fish & Open Range began as a unique dockside style service to Calgarians in 2005 having been originally named ‘Big Fish.’ Evenings, weekday lunch, and weekend brunch, all featuring menu items unique to the Big Fish experience were served. Big Fish looked to continuously provided a better experience for guests by staying on top of the latest seafood trends. Big Fish also took pride in being an Ocean Wise Partner.

Open Range opened its doors in 2007 as a premier Calgary steak and chop house next door to Big Fish. It embodied the essence of Calgary; cutting edge, but comfortable and unpretentious. Open Range mixed modern with tradition, serving every cut of meat you would expect but preparing it with an interesting variation of flavours.

The vision of Big Fish & Open Range came to be in 2020 after success in providing a duel surf and turf experience. Rather than operating both businesses independently, the decision was made to combine both restaurant concepts – why have one when you can have both? Thus, customers have the opportunity to order from an expanded menu that offers a larger variety of options to appeal to all tastes and cravings.

C	C W on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Consistently good food that we return to time and time again! Would give 4.5 stars if I could. Great service from our server Michael. Apologies if I got the name wrong. Overall most of the entrees could have been seasoned better. Generous portions all around. Veggies (carrots, broccoli and golden beets) were cooked perfectly. Frogs legs - nicely cooked and piping hot. Could have used some salt. Served with a nice lemony aioli. Nice surprise this time around is that it was served with fries (last time we were there there were no fries) which were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Served with housemaid ketchup. A little weird that it was made from pumpkin. Pistachio Crusted Arctic Char - the cook on the Arctic Char was perfect, really moist. The sun dried olive could be more flavorful though. Mushroom risotto was yummy. Elk Ribeye - perfectly cooked rare as requested. The red pepper jelly ended up being on everything on the plate. Don't know if that was the intention but would ask for it to not be that way next time. Twice baked potato was awesome although a little too much corn.

We went with appetizers because everything looked so good and 4 for the 2 of us left us way too full! The servings are a really good size. We had the clam chowder, nicoise salad, seafood platter and lobster crab and artichoke dip. All were excellent. I really enjoyed each dish for different reasons. The waiter provided great service and had good recommendations. The restaurant itself was nice with cool octopus art. Definitely recommend for a date night or event or night out.

We had a big group (9 adults and 2 kids under 10) and we had the best service from Cindy and the rest of the Big Fish/Open Range team. My husband who booked the reservation thought that it was a breeze and we also had a follow up call leading up to the date. On the day itself, the setup was all set and they also allowed us to have our own gluten free cake cut by their kitchen staff. We have foodies in our families so it is wonderful to hear that they are very impressed with the food quality and portion - as most of them have also not tried their brunch menu. We had seafood platter with homemade condiments of chutney and spreads, the lamb and scramble, seafood chowder, Soft shell crab club, bison burgers, egg bennies, and even the kiddies liked their French toast (and happily devoured them), and lox. Great local food and very attentive service and truly sumptuous dishes! You gained a fan in us. Thank you for the great hospitality!

We were two adults and a toddler and were actually stuffed from just a few oysters and two entrées. Everything from the veggies to the meat/fish was tasty and flavourful. Our server was nice and attentive as well.

They have indoor and outdoor seating but during my visit the seating outside is closed due to the weather conditions. The elk and salmon are highly recommended here, this location is excellent for fine dining.

I for sure will be going back whenever I crave this burger. We wanted to try some appetizer and dessert but we were both sooo full! Their drink menu looked amazing too! The restaurant is slightly on the smaller side but it was easy to reserve through open table!
