This rating only applies to the kayak rentals. Service and price were very reasonable, but given the comparison with other kayak rental outlets, the equipment fell short of my expectations. The water was calm, but the single kayaks looked to be better equipped for a pond or small lake - certainly not the ocean. The tandem, however, was decent. Again, service was great!

What a lovely small campground! It was our first time there and we will be back. We went on an impromptu trip of the island and we found this one in Courtney. They were accommodating, friendly and clean. The nice thing about Bates is that it is a fairly central location close to everything yet far enough out that you have the serenity of the forest and ocean. The property sits alongside seal bay beach which is a beautiful park and a sandy beach. We saw seals and lots of ducks as well there was a beautiful little stream running in the middle of the campground. It acted like a natural barrier between the fully serviced "glamping" spots and the water/electricity only sites.

Beautiful view. Nice to just sit back and watch the ocean. Rocky beach right out front (great for finding skipping rocks) and if you follow the beach a little further you have a bit of a sandy area. The sites aren't private at all but everyone is super nice.

We just spent 3 nights here camping and it was bliss. Our oceanfront site was perfect for watching sunrise and the campsite as a whole was pretty quiet. We were only woken by noise once and it was a Whale passing through the area!

Drove up from Victoria to check out this site on a recommendation from a friend. We arrived and went into the office to check in and see what was available and what site our trailer would fit. Staff were rude and not very pleasant. Apparently they are not interested in new business as they were not very receptive to us making a reservation for next year. Even though the view was fantastic it does not out way the lack of hospitality or the lack of Walmart parking lot feel.

We had made an online reservation and a campsite was assigned to us. Upon arrival their rope/gate was up. Their office was closed, we called twice and left messages. We walked the campground area hoping to locate the manager. We stayed approximately 30 minutes before leaving. We did call again leaving yet another message to cancel our reservation.

Views were sooo beautiful...but definitely no privacy. We are a family of 3, absolutely no privacy tent camping. I guess we are used to provincial camping so this was definitely not what we were used to. Stuck in the middle site between 2 older couples trying to have a relaxing time. Which is virtually impossible with our 6 y.o energetic boy! Probably would have been ok if that portion had 2 campsites instead of the tight fit for 3. We were supposed to stay for 2 nights but left after the 1st morning due to the lack of privacy. I would probably go again if I camped as a group occupying the 3 sites. Views were amazing tho.

Small campground, cute, friendly people, typical comox rocky beach though.
