About Amaranth Foods - Enjoy Centre Market

A Short History

In the early 90’s, our fearless founder, Ken Klatt, saw the need for a new kind of health food store- one that welcomed everyone. After an awkward experience shopping at the local organic food store while wearing a suit, Ken got to work creating this space.

Let’s let him tell the story.

Two events in my life led me down this path. The first was environment-related. I was one of a small group of Calgarians who valued the benefits of recycling paper and glass. We worked individually in our own communities to host monthly recycling drives at our community centres. As our success grew, we joined forces and reached out to business partners – a local mall, the city of Calgary, Nova Corporation – and initiated recycling drives at a shopping centre in northwest Calgary.

The second was my getting involved with a local health food co-op. I began shopping at the Earth Harvest Co-op after tasting some organic apples.  Befriending staff on my weekly shopping trips led to several terms as a director for the co-op. At that time, it seemed like the industry was living in the past and that by presenting a more inviting shopping experience, we would encourage more people to buy these healthy products. I had the concept of increasing this market by creating a demand for organics rather than marching in the street and telling farmers what to grow.

*UPDATED REVIEW* I previously wrote a negative review about Amaranth regarding an issue with a Magnesium supplement I purchased. Amaranth has since reached out and resolved the situation. I received excellent customer service from Faun in the wellness center. She was very responsive and personable, and renewed my confidence in Amaranth.

I was in need of some guidance with some supplements and Anne was working when I went in. Anne was wonderful with helping me find just what I needed. She seemed extremely well educated and I really appreciated her knowledge. Thank you so much Anne, I will be back many more times!

Incredibly diverse and large selections of clean food, and the two people who were stocking shelves were very kind and happy to help find what I needed. Prices are similar to other places selling the same packaged items, but this store is definitely a 1 stop shop. I found the bulk organic shredded coconut to be a great price! Perhaps if you stick to the bulk section you will find more bargains.

Really cool clean grocery store. This grocery store is all green. It’s clean and well lit. The staff are friendly and courteous. The fact that the store pretty much all organic products does make the price on the higher side but the quality of the products is great.

I ordered grapes at two different occasions and both times they were completely molded. This time the grapes were labeled 50% off. These need to be trashed not sold at a discount they are not salvageable. Oranges are blackened and squishy. Please take a look at your produce your selling. You charge a lot of money at this health food store so the quality needs to be better.

I love shopping at Amaranth St. Albert. It’s a quaint store, not overwhelming, just has the items we need. Trying to support local now more than ever and Amaranth makes it easy to do so. Lots of healthy options, although would still like to see more products with out canola, vegetable or seed oils in them. Prices are comparable to any other health/organic shop options.

I was just asked to leave the St. Albert store for not wearing a mask. The manager/clerk asked if I had an exemption. I said yes and no, he asked to see it. By law, he cannot ask this for it is private and confidential medical information. He insisted I leave the store, yet I was speaking with another customer who wasn't wearing a mask. When I questioned this clerk/manager he said that they have a special understanding and she is OK not to wear a mask. I smiled and left the store. We, as Canadians need to stand up and put an end to this narrative. I will continue to honor the stores that understand this. Suffice to say it will be a cold day in h$%* before I darken this stores door. As for the clerk/manager, when the only power any person has is the power of "no" small people will exercise this power to the nth degree. He actually pushed the blame onto the owner...

I love this store and the staff. I shop at Amaranth for most of my fresh produce and meat. I like the fact that it's local farms that supply a large portion of the products and they have a rewards system where you can collect points and work towards a discount like bigger supermarkets. I feel good that I'm supporting smaller businesses and the environment plus the money is staying in my community. They have a bulk dry goods section where you can get local flour, beans, dried fruit, and other various items. As well as a health food section for personal items and supplements. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and it's nice to actually see the same faces and hear a Hi Debbie when I walk up to the till. SHOP LOCAL, I highly recommend Amaranth!
