About Alliance Française Calgary

Preparation for the SLE - Second Language Evaluation

Are you a Federal government employee, and you need to take the French as a Second Language Evaluation test soon? Do you need to reach either level B or C in French in order to progress in your career?

The Alliance Française Calgary has been offering French training to civil servants for over 50 years. Our instructors have experience in coaching federal public service employees for preparation of the SLE (Second Language Evaluation).

We help students prepare for the 3 components to the SLE: Written Comprehension, Written Expression & Oral Proficiency to reach the BBB, CBC or CCC levels. There are two options to start learning French:

Group classes

You can join one of our group classes and improve your language skills with our standard method and our general curriculum within a group of up to 12 students (online or in-person).

Private classes

You can request private training (online or in-person) with flexible scheduling. You can choose to have classes once or twice a week or follow an intensive program (up to 5 hours of French per day). Lessons are tailored to your particular needs, and we use the official program PFLS with the Objectifs de Formation.

Attended various courses and events at Alliance Francaise for over 20 years. The staff have been consistently great - they are helpful, patient, hard working and talented. The courses/events are engaging and well thought out. The resources are extensive. The other students are from all over the world (downtown centre) and so you really get a multi-cultural/global perspective. If you have any interest in furthering your knowledge of French language and culture -- this is the place to go! You will have a wonderful time.

I am having the best learning experience with Alliance Française Calgary. The instructors are excellent, the staff is very welcoming and kind, and both in-person and online classes are great. I've rapidly improved my French level in the few months I've been taking classes with AFC, I've made a bunch of friends and I've had lots of fun while learning. I reccommend this institution 100% to everyone who wants to have the best French learning experience. Merci AFC !

This past Friday I attended the presentation given by Lucile on the French tradition of "La Galette des Rois.” I have been to several in-person events but this was my first online one. True to form, it was enriching, educational, and fun! I particularly enjoyed the pictures showcasing the different versions of the recipe throughout the world and across different regions of France. They looked so delectable I wish it was possible to sample them all. The event description listed Black Sheep as one of the patisseries in Calgary that would have the galette, I went to the pastry shop, but they unfortunately stopped making it since it’s seasonal. Nothing beats homemade anyways and the presentation included the recipe along with video instructions to make our very own next January. As a novice to the language, I was reassured when Lucile asked us to tell her if she was going too fast. The pace was perfect, however, and the delivery was exceptional. Thank you so much for sharing this heartwarming tradition!

The best place to learn or improve your French. It is a very welcoming environment and they offer many cultural events: for example music and cinema. They have the largest French Library in the province!

AF Calgary is an important institution for the francophone community in Alberta. I began with AF Calgary as an adult learner, with basic understanding of French. Over the span of a year, AF Calgary helped me develop the confidence to hold conversations with native French speakers. Their courses are top notch, and are flexible based on your work schedule. Their instructors are incredibly friendly and highly skilled, they are so patient with me as I jumble my way speaking French. They also offer amazing cultural events, which give you an opportunity to make friends with other francophiles. Overall, they provide a space and community where you can thrive en français in an anglophone city. You can't go wrong with AF Calgary.

I have been with Alliance Francaise for over a year and have returned time and time again for the events and classes. The teachers are incredibly attentive, and eager to help. It is because of this high quality of programming that I have continued to learn French. If you're considering Alliance Francaise for your learning needs, look no further!!!

Such a great organization! Pricing for classes are comparable, but I find the quality far greater. The instructors are so helpful, and classes are well done both in person and virtually. Great events (again virtually and in person) and so many resources in the library!
