We saw a pileated woodpecker finally! And at the same time we met naturalists from the Ontario Master Naturalist Program (OMNP) and they confirmed our sighting. It also made me value the Alexander Hope Smith Nature Reserve even more after meeting one of Ontario’s lead naturalists hiking the park.

What a beautiful place! Really nice trail - single track plus a loop. It took us a little over an hour. Nice views of the creek and saw a Great Blue Heron and other waterfowl.

Very nice day walk... Some soggy spots... I can see bug repellent being required

Maintained marked trails begin near the end of Riverdale Drive with a sign at trail head. Get a map on-line from Couchiching Conservancy or photograph the posted map at the trail heads. The re-signed through trail is marked with white rectangles, combining the former green and white marked trails, continuing to a trail head near where Riverdale Drive crosses Boyd's Creek. There are two blue-marked side-trails (former yellow and red loops) to serene views of Boyd's Creek (and the sounds of highway 11). The area in general has hardwood forests with rock ridges, some bogs and streams. There are considerable wildlife (some bears on occasion) and bird varieties. Bug season is highest in May-June-July. (Note: the ancient "rock chair" was vandalized and only one rock remained - sad to say - and the vandals have now thrown the last one into the creek - no part of the chair remains.) A loop can be completed via the road, which connects the two trail heads.(November 2021: The white trail east of the rock chair loop has two large wet sections that can be difficult to cross. The farther one can mostly be avoided by following temporary flagging markers off the white marked trail. A boardwalk is planned for 2022.)

Very easy walking trail for some nice marshaled look outs. Not the most dramatic views Jin Muskoka, but perfect for an easy chat and stroll on am afternoon cottaging
