About Affordable Home Insulators Ltd.

Think about insulation when planning out your summer home renovation projectRenovation season is here !  It's spring, and its time for all of us to get going on our own home renovation projects.  For some, this may be a simple flower bed upgrade, and for others, it may mean the addition of a kitchen expansion, the addition of a second floor on a bungalow, or finally devloping that basement  you never use.

Insulation is not a cosmetic aspect of your home, so it's often overlooked when planning a renovation.  It's not as beautiful as new kitchen countertops, but it can help pay for those new countertops by saving you up to 40% off your current heating and cooling costs.  When planning your renovation, here are a few areas you should consider improving, while you are making a mess in your home.

  • Upgrade your attic. It gives you the best return on your investment, it's simple, and doesn't really affect any other areas of your home. If you have a home that is more than 15 years old, you can probably save significant money on energy costs, especially during our bitter winter season, in Calgary.

  • Inspect and upgrade your ventilation in the attic. If you are planning on a new roof, there is nothing more important than ensuring that your roof is protected from below, from searing heat that may build up in the summer, and frozen moisture that may build up in the winter. Ensure that you have air intake at your soffits, and make sure that you have adequate outflow of air, via roof vents and turbines.

  • Basement insulation. The second leading cause of heat loss in an older home is typically poor, or no, insulation in the basement, particularly in the "header" and "joist end" areas at the top of your concrete frost wall. This is an service that we offer, that is often overlooked. Even if you are not developing your basement, please make sure that you have adequate exterior frost wall insuation, and that you have no drafts or cold air penetration through your joist end spaces. We offer a full line of fiberglass, spray foam, and even reflective insulation to combat heat loss.

  • Draft proof other areas of your home, on the exterior walls. This is a great DIY project. You can buy outlet gaskets at your local home improvement store, and add caulking around those drafty window and door casings. This is also a great time to ensure that you have good weatherstripping on your exterior doors as well.

  • Don't forget about your garage attic. Many modern homes have an attached garage and they often have a shared attic space. Most new homes have less or even zero, attic insulation in the garage portion. This can lead to significan cold infiltration into your home, and causes a convective effect, drawing heat out of your common garage wall.

  • Be kind to your electrician. If you are doing major electrical work up in your attic, or you are adding a second floor onto your bungalow, please remember that we offer full insulation removal services. Trust me, this is something you don't want to tackle yourself. We often get calls from frantic homeowners who start removing their insulation with shop vacs, and shovels, and garbage bags. When we empty our five ton truck at the dump, and it contains 2 tons of material that we just vaccumed out of someones attic, I often wonder "who does this by hand ?"

Pleae remember that this is a great time of the year to get some insulation work done because the cost of labour is lower, and everyone is not stressed out about cold winter days.  Give us a call, and get a free onsite estimate, to see what areas we can improve, and save some money this winter !

Dave came to our home to give us a quote. Very down to earth guy that explained everything and did not oversell or criticize in order to up-sell. His years of experience are evident in his explanations of what you need and what you don't. He arrived with his team and wasted no time with the game plan or getting it done. The one thing I really appreciated was they way he handled the fellows. Although I could tell they had lots of experience Dave continued to teach and lend tips in a calm manner that resulted in an excellent job. The whole crew was clean, well mannered and had the job finished and cleaned up in record time. I must say that our home already has a different cozy kind of feel to it and is much quieter than the day before. We are looking forward to seeing the difference in our utility bills.

We had them in to remove and replace our insulation. Dave or Dan (I forget his name)_ was great and didn't push extras like some of the other quotes that we got. The cleaned up really good, better than I expected anyways. They put in new insulation the next day, and pointed out and fixed some issues we had with one of our roof vents and a bathroom fan. I would recommend them to anyone looking for this kind of service.

We own a 55 year old house in Calgary and recently had Affordable Home Insulators in to take out the out wood chips and put in new insulation. They took out the old material the first day and the next day put in the new insulation. Great people, they cleaned up the work site both days we would recommend them for your attic upgrade. Thanks Donna & Murray

The short review - they did an excellent job. The longer... We have a 1956 bungalow, and this two man crew of David and Corey did a super job of sucking out all the old insulation as well as removing four big bags of construction debris left up there from the last six decades. They refilled the attic with 18” of R50 Fibreglass loose-fill insulation. They also put in two whirlybirds for our 1300 sf house and air chutes. They informed us about the government rebate program and have submitted the paperwork for us. We appreciate it and it’s nice to know we’ll get a few hundred dollars back. We went ahead with all of David’s recommendations, without question, because he came highly recommended by our very trusted contractor (and no, they're not in cahoots). The entire process took two consecutive days. We were lucky not to have to wait days for the attic to be re-insulated. The guys are polite and nice, conscientious, clean, careful and from what we can tell, they did a really good job. We would highly recommend them to friends and family and to you. They are busy, so it can take a few days to get a return call, hang in there, it’s worth it!

Contacted Home Insulators via online form at 9 a.m for Attic insulation. Had a complete quote in my hands by 10. Booked them and they arrived within 5 minutes of their scheduled time. The 2 fellas that came out were friendly and professional. Kept the place clean and did a great job on upgrading the insulation in my attic. Also did all the paperwork for the Alberta Energy Rebate Great to find home contractors that care.

I got them to top up my insulation in my twenty year old house. Great responsiveness, great price, great service. When they got here they even said an optional item that I thought I needed was in fact not needed and saved me money. That doesn’t happen often. Highly recommend from my experience.

Affordable Insulators added insulation to my attic and also β€œrepaired” my bathroom fan vent by adding a backdraft preventer to stop the backflip on the fan to stop flapping during windy nights. The backdraft preventer they installed basically wouldn’t let any air out of the bathroom fan vent. I called them back and they came to look at it, but claimed it worked fine. It has not been working still and our bathroom fogs up, as well as moisture drips out of the bathroom fan now. Also they originally quoted me to add attic ventilation, but when they arrived to do the work, no longer would do that portion of the job. It was very inconvenient to find another contractor to take on a small job, which they should have just done as they quoted. I have emailed them, and called but they have not responded. The crew that did the work seemed good but their customer service is really lacking, especially if you have problems. EDIT: The Fan works perfectly fine, the backdraft preventer they installed is blocking the duct.

HomeInsulators added enough white fiberglass to upgrade my attic insulation to R-50. They were the only company to offer me rafter vents (air chutes) installation to provide a good air circulation. Price was really competitive compare to others quotes, and they did a really good and clean job. I am totally satisfied and I would recommand them to anyone.
