About YWCA Prince Albert

Our Work

YWCA Prince Albert provides shelter, food and assistance to marginalized populations to help break the cycle of poverty. We offer life skills programs, advocacy, and support to help individuals transition from our emergency homeless shelter to our transitional housing programs onto our permanent housing programs. It is our hope that by supporting marginalized populations through their journey we are able to be part of the solution to ending homelessness.

We also offer a number of services and programs for newcomers to Canada and newcomers to the Prince Albert region at our Central Avenue location through the Community Connection Centre. We provide support for newcomers to Canada in numerous schools throughout the city through the Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program.

Who We Serve

We help a variety of people from diverse backgrounds to improve their lives. We serve individuals and families who originate from Prince Albert and area, as well as newcomers from around the world.

The local individuals and families we serve come from distinct experiences that have shaped their identity and situation. These experiences come in the form of abuse, addictions, identity issues, disability, gang activity, violence, lack of education, and others. All of these things culminate in difficulty maintaining employment, maintaining housing, and managing finances. Homelessness is a reality facing many that we serve, so reaching out to us provides them the support that they need to receive temporary or transitional shelter in one of our programs.

We help Government Assisted Refugees by welcoming them, teaching them about their new community, helping them find housing, making English language classes accessible, assisting with government documents, and providing employment support. These newcomers are fleeing their home countries due to violence, political unrest, or other life-threatening situations. The trauma experienced in these situations is some of the most challenging, as refugees are leaving what they know for an unfamiliar country where they usually do not speak the local language.

Our goal is to help people get back on their feet, all while providing them with opportunities to learn valuable skills that enable them to take control of their lives again. By providing skills training and support, individuals and families are able to achieve independence and freedom.

Very few of the staff are really intolerant towards mentally ill people and refuse to understand your symptoms and the way you are. Some of them don't listen to you or are just rude. It's a hit and miss with the staff but the management is very tolerant, patient, and understanding. Other than that, it's a roof over your head and food in your stomach for every day you're staying here, which makes some of the bad eggs at the front more tolerable.

I couldn't stand living here, one of the tenants who was staying here left to live in a tent because she couldn't bare to live there any longer. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for the roof over my head when I really needed it. The food in me and my daughters stomach when we couldn't afford it. The attitude amongst many women who work there is just terrible. You have one slight reaction to anything they get hostile and corner you to make you feel small. They are always right and can never be wrong. You are a bad parent, that's why you are there. They always feel the need to tell you how to parent if it's not right in their eyes. Excuse me ma'am, I am a great parent compared to my own mother... I would say I am doing a great job. I wish these ladies treated everyone with respect, they always come in to work just miserable. I left and I will never suggest that place to anyone.. unless you're an ass kisser. Then.. be my guest.
