About Winnipeg Mennonite Elementary & Middle Schools - Bedson Campus

After a long and full life, Mrs. Katherine Friesen passed away peacefully on November 1, 2015. Katherine and her husband (David), were very committed to the community and were instrumental in founding many community institutions during their lives. Winnipeg Mennonite Elementary Schools Inc. (WMEMS) was one of those institutions. Since 1981 thousands of students have benefitted and been influenced by the vision that Mrs. Friesen had for a Mennonite elementary educational choice here in the city of Winnipeg.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Friesen a few times and it was very apparent to me that she had a huge heart and passion for children. The interactions that I witnessed between Mrs. Friesen and our students were truly heartwarming.

Mrs. Friesen and her family have been with us since day one and will always be with us as long as we exist. In June of 2014 we named our Fort Garry campus after Mrs. Friesen to recognize the important role that she played in our founding and growth over the years.

This Friday, we will take some time during our school chapels to give thanks for Mrs. Friesen, her life and the vision that she so passionately believed in. We are saddened that she is gone from this earth, but encouraged by the fact that she is enjoying eternal life with our Saviour and fellow believers.

A celebration of Mrs. Friesen’s life will be held on December 21st at the Qualico Family Centre. I will be there on behalf of our schools and our communities. I will pass along our condolences, but I will also pass along our thanks. Thank you for the support, the passion and the vision, but most importantly thank you for taking action to make your vision come to life. Thank you for stepping forward and pressing ahead. Thousands of children and families have benefitted from your work and will continue to benefit for years to come.

Lawrence Hamm

Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer

Principal needs his position with the school reviewed. I hope the board sees this. The amount of abuse is appalling. Please listen to what parents and students are saying on here. I know many parents have gone to the board and voiced their concerns.

Isn't it a bit sad when you have parents going on here leaving bad reviews? I attended this school. Did not enjoy it at all. The principal is a bully. I was a little different, but he sure knew how to pick and pick away at me when I was struggling. And yes I still do remember some of the stuff he did to this day. That was 13 years ago.

This school has already done amazing things for my daughter. The moral fiber they instill and how that is reflected at home makes it all worth it. Let alone the great staff. Highly recommended to at least take a look.

This school sure does talk a good talk but does not deliver! They say caring and nurturing but that's only if you fit into the "box." otherwise no support. The principal there Mr Stoesz is a manipulative bully to Students and to Staff to get his way. He is always right and it's the parents fault! No accountability! His favorite color is grey I am sure! So glad we noticed this after a short time and went to a school where they understand how to be effective with students. That principal will be the reason the schools enrollment declines!

All 3 of my children have benefitted from the strong and supportive community of this school! With excellent teachers that go above and beyond they have felt valued and are educated in preparation for wherever their life may lead them.

I went to this school for 9 years. I made a lot of good friends but the last few years there I had a terrible experience. The school was getting involved with my personal life and the principal David steoz picked on me all the time. He was very rude to me. The other teachers are very nice but the principal made me cry many times and I felt put down by him. Parents I wouldn’t suggest this school for your kids. And I’m not the only kid who has gone there that has had a bad experience. My parents told me they wished they pulled me out years ago so I wouldn’t have to go through what I did.

As a student of wmems it is unfortunate that there are so many people leaving bad reviews and lying about the school. The Principal is a wonderful person and does care about the children despite what people say. I can confidently say that this is a good school with just morals.

My kids attend and notice an improvement with the learning compared with their former public school. I no longer need to feel the need to heavily supplement my children's education.
