Several years ago I fell on slippery sidewalk and shattered my hip. After a 7 hour operation, I was left with nerve damage that affected my lower leg and foot, making walking difficult. I was registered with this organization for the Snow Angel program. I had received a phone call from a young women last week to tell me that she would be the person to clear snow. Saturday Nov 18th it snowed almost 2 feet. Waited until Sunday noon, swallowed some pain pills and using the shovel to balance myself, managed after a couple hours to clear the driveway out. No show from the "snow angel"....no phone call.... Monday Nov 20th I phoned Volunteer Terrace to find out what happened. I got transferred to a woman who was in charge of the program. I told her that I was disabled and had difficulty walking. This woman told me that the teenage girl "didn't feel comfortable" going to my place. Having raised 4 kids of my own, I suggested that it was more likely that it was an excuse and that maybe the girl just didn't feel like shoveling 2 feet of snow. Believe it or not....this woman said that I was being rude to HER for saying that about one of her volunteers. She then threatened me with being removed from the snow angel list. Having gone thru conflict resolution training, I realized that I was getting the "personal attack" strategy. For some unknown reason, this woman wanted to "put me in my place". In an attempt to continue discussing the problem, I told her that I didn't feel I was being rude....just annoyed that someone said they were going to do something, then decides not to....without even a courtesy of a phone call. This organization may have started with good intentions, but it appears to have DEGENERATED into one that does not like the slightest hint of criticism or ANY expectation of ACTUAL delivery of service. Senior citizens and disabled people---BE CAREFUL when dealing with this organization. Sadly...it appears it has not problem using bullying tactics...intimidation...and threats....
