Village of Flaxcombe - Kindersley

As one of only 2 Ozone Facilities in Saskatchewan, Flaxcombe has an uncommon, but very effective treatment facility to supply clean water to each and every household. Due to our treatment process, we are classified as a Class II Treatment Facility which requires a bit more education from our Operators.

Firstly, we utilize generators to create a gas called Ozone that is immediately introduced into contact tanks with the incoming raw water. This is our pre-treatment process. Ozone is a water soluble, toxic gas used to oxidize organic material found in raw water. Since our water is spring water, and is considered surface water, it comes into contact with many living organisms. Ozone is extremely effective in deactivating such bacteria as Giardia, Cryptosporidium, parasites, fungi, molds and numerous other microbes (harmful and not). By the 6th contact tank the stength of the Ozone is very weak, and we are left with deactivated debris in the water. 

Our filtrations system contains 1 roughing filter to remove large debris, 6 gravity fed slow sand filters to remove fine, microbial debris, and 2 Activated Charcoal tanks to assist in the reduction of heavy metals as our water is naturally very rich in Iron. 

The product of these tanks is fed into a transfer tank where it is then met with a very small amount of chlorine before it is stored in our cistern. Because our treatment process is so thorough, a minimal amount of chlorine is needed to meet Provincial Regulations. On average, we use less than 500mL of chlorine a day. During the winter, it can be as low was 250mL of chlorine a day.
