“Untitled blocks” is a sculpture by artist Bodo Pfeifer, built in 1972. An outdoor sculpture Featuring several yellow cubes with mirrored tops open for interpretation and exploration. The yellow is artificial and bright, it’s reminiscent of the yellow tone used for utilities and traffic. The cubes are a man made shape, referencing houses, office towers, apartments. it constants with the natural greenery of the field and park land. At the same time it references natural qualities: The mirrored tops mimic the sun on surface of water or crystals, the cubes could reference salt crystals which are cube-like, the yellow could be a reference dandelions. Contrasting nature while also drawing attention to nature and artificiality. 1972 was the start of Vancouver’s urbanization, and that transformation is even clearer in 2021 where glass condos can be seen in many directions of the park... where none existed in 1972. An era where the downtown core didn’t have a skyline or a skytrain, no Metrotown mall or Guilford. A modern reading could find allegory where the blocks represent the glass mega towers intruding onto our green spaces. The sculpture could be read as a playful: A game of checkers, lego blocks, or something from Minecraft or Super Mario. A lifesize puzzle to unlock a power-up. Disco and Rubix Cubes. There’s no explanation, no guide, it is just open-ended “untitled blocks”.
