Sensei Taka Kinjo is originally from Okinawa. Since 1973 at his dojo, Sensei Taka teaches a combination of Tomarite and Goju-ryu styles called Gohaku-kai. His classes are suitable for kids as young as 7 years old up to seniors, beginner level to blackbelts. He emphasizes respect of others and respect to yourself, and not only on the growth of physical strength, but a balance between mental and physical well-being. If you are looking for sparring partners, look elsewhere. This school concentrates on the art of how not to fight, by practicing the basic karate movements called kata, and learning about the application of the kata moves in real life. It is a great place to learn karate history, the many kata movements, meeting new people, and a great aerobic workout for even the most out-of-shape person wanting to lose some weight. Go and see a free demonstration some time.

I don't know much about the one in Lethbridge, but when I was a young teenager, I was part of a Karate class in a small town outside Lethbridge. My sensei had Kinjo as his teacher. It was from 1997 or so until 2002-3ish I was into it. Over the years, I'd go to all the classes, but everything I learned was only good for sport style tournaments. Nothing ever prepared me for an actual real life street situation. If someone on the streets were to come at me with a knife for example, the Karate I learned would never have saved me. The Kata's I learned, well I couldn't digure out the street application to them and my sensei refused to teach the actual combat application. So just a disclaimer for anyone at any age who goes to any sensei who teaches this style of Karate. You are not going to learn self defense. You are not going to learn how to become a combat fighter for the streets. I understand Karate is about way more than that. True. But the whole combative element is not there. The karate learned will not save your life. I was a brown belt and I can tell you I could not defend myself. What works in a tournament isn't what will work against a 300 pound ex con on the streets who wants to hurt you. Nobody on the streets will play by the rules that you play under in a tournament.

Great atmosphere and instructors! We love them and the reverse is obvious.

Sensei Kinjo teaches authentic, traditional Karate. It is not meant to be about street fighting. As he said once in a quote, "If you want to learn how to street-fight, go downtown and people will teach you." Karate is about the physical and the traditional martial arts way, but the most important part of this is developing the character of the individual and helping them to strive to be better within themselves so they can be better people in the world.
