About Southminster United Church

The United Church of Canada was formed in 1925 of a union of Congregational, Methodist and most Presbyterian Churches. Since then other congregations have joined the Union and in 1968 the Evangelical United Brethren also became part of The United Church of Canada.

While we are the largest Canadian Protestant Church that serves our nation from sea to sea to sea, we are diverse. From congregrations in villages, small towns, fishing outposts, First Nations communities to large ‘Cathedral-like’ urban faith communities, our physical diversity is mirrored by the respect we have for the many ways we worship and vision our God through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.

As Jesus invited his disciples 2000 years ago, “‘Come and See’ Won’t You?” In 1913 building began on an 1,100 seat sanctuary for the Methodist folk in Lethbridge, a city of less than 10,000 souls. This enterprise was realized in 1914 and was known as Wesley Church until 1925. In this year the United Church of Canada was created and we became Wesley United Church. Ten years later in the midst of the great depression, Wesley and its sister Knox United became one! The amalgamated church continues to be known as Southminster United Church.

Our heritage is woven closely to the City we serve in Christ’s name. As an acoustically marvelous structure, we continue to partner with the arts and university community in hosting musical events. Our 4 manual Cascavant organ invites organ recitals annually and contributes greatly to our ‘blend’ of traditional and contemporary music in worship weekly.

Southminster is its people and its mission. Our pithy Mission Statement ‘God Calls and We Respond’ captures much of what we are all about. And so, we extend an invitation where, with God’s help and with you, we can continue together opening hearts, opening minds, and opening doors to Jesus Christ.

Just as Jesus invited his followers to “Come and See”, so do the folks at Southminster invite you.

The person leading the simple, intimate religious services we have attended here was kind, articulate, and sincere. For a person not of this religious denomination, I find it easy to follow, friendly, and familiar.

Beautiful church. One of the best in Lethbridge. I have played jazz music here, and the reverb is slightly overwhelming. Better for hymns and piano. Very great architecture as well.

My uncles took my wife and I here for a symphony and I loved it. Don't read this review if you want to know about the priest or congregation, but it is a beautiful building, in a location with a lot of parking available on nearby streets, and the fact that they had a symphony shows that the congregation is probably made up of some pretty welcoming folk.

Visited often as a musician, not as a member of the church congregation. Live acoustics, accommodating facility to the needs of rental groups for use as a performance venue, great people to communicate with, easy access and location! Lots of space, but there are a few barriers to use as a performance venue, such as awkward sight lines in some locations, an aging H/VAC system, and restroom facilities.

Have been there only for school band concerts. Beautiful woodwork. Men's bathroom stall is small but with an old building that's expected. Here's warm in the summer so sit in the main floor or bring a small folding hand fan.
