About Southminster-Steinhauer United Church
In 2008, Australian cleric Francis MacNab became infamous: it’s when his “new faith” got launched…with a $120,000 ad campaign…which included posters that called the Ten Commandments “one of the most negative documents ever written.” So he wrote 10 new ones: “live life fully”; “be kind and caring towards the animals”; “study the things of ultimate concern”; etc. His faith is explained in this new Featured Book.
“Minister for life” at one of Australia’s largest and most radical congregations, Melbourne’s St. Michael’s Uniting Church—at the age of 85, he retired in 2016—MacNab has been a fellow of The Jesus Seminar; a member of the Order of Australia; the author of over 25 books; the founder and executive director of his country’s largest clinical psychological centre; and the person “some said should have been drummed out of town,” as he tells it.
He—who once declared, “I think it’s very important…to look at…traditional beliefs, and consider, ‘Do I really believe that stuff?”—reckoned that “The old faith has no interest or grip for many people.” To replace it, he sought to bond what HarperCollins Religion describes as a “practical interweave between psychotherapy and a health-enhancing religion.”

The Sunday service is always an enjoyable time, filled with wisdom, time to reflect & express gratitude for life. Very humanistic & Earthbound, this church is for all the people who want spirituality without all the harsh ideologies of organized religion.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Moderately large, suitable for I'd say about 60-70. There's only the first level and the basement, but that in itself is roomy. Quite useful for rehearsals, be it for choir, plays, etcetera.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We have been attended SSUC for just over two years now. I came to find a place where I could bring my kids to have conversations about community and meaning. I love the welcome we receive - the kindness and generosity from all the members. I love the rainbow of families that are represented. I have trouble pulling my daughter OUT of the Baby Care room and I love the messages my son comes home with from KidSpirit. They RUN to the "Time for all Ages".
I came for my children - but have been amazed at how much I have come to need my time here. Nancy and Chris are both wonderful speakers - their messages are clear and accessible, and a wonderful reminder of the importance of looking beyond work, hockey practice, swimming lessons and appointments and see the infinite.
I would recommend SSUC for any family seeking something beyond the tangible.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ SSUC is a place where you are welcomed. Folks genuinely want to get to know you and encourage you to participate in this community. It is a very relaxed atmosphere - no dress code! I find the ideas/themes discussed each Sunday are always interesting, often thought provoking, and always relevant to my life. We listen to wisdom from ancient times to current authors. I recommend joining us on a Sunday. You might find just what you did not realize you were missing!
