Must-Have Items When Storing Your Vehicle Outdoors

Published on 2021-07-22Must-Have Items When Storing Your Vehicle Outdoors

We take great care to protect and preserve your vehicle while you have it stored away. However, there are some things that can help ensure your vehicle remains in top-notch shape when you arrive to take it away. Here are some items we’ve decided are the best to consider when planning the storage of your vehicle. This list is by no means comprehensive, so if you have any questions, feel free to contact us about how best to store your car or truck.

Covers

First on our list is a must-have for any outdoor storage of any vehicle: a quality cover. These covers help save the vehicle's exterior from weather damage. The sun, rain, snow, hail, and even wind can take a toll on your vehicle over time. These covers add an extra layer of protection to ensure that your car or truck looks just as it did when you parked it in the first place. Price-wise you are looking at as low as around $30 to up to around $250. They vary in size and material types, so be sure to shop around and find the best fit and material for your car or truck.

Trickle Charger

Next on our list is something that can really save you in the long run when it comes to your car or truck’s battery: a trickle charger. You may be asking yourself, why not just disconnect the battery? Well, while that does work in preserving your battery, it WILL reset all your vehicle’s presets. That means clock, radio, Bluetooth configurations, and anything that has a preset in your car or truck will be wiped. Connecting a trickle charger will keep the battery preserved while preserving your vehicle’s presets and settings at the same time. It’s a win-win!

Tire Blocks or Jacks

This next one is a trick that not many think of: tire blocks and/or jacks. Parking your car or truck doesn’t mean there is no strain on it anymore. The parking brake itself is held in strain throughout the entire duration of storage. This will put significant wear on it. In order to preserve it, you can use tire blocks to keep your vehicle right where you left it without straining your brakes. You can go a step further than that even by jacking the car up. It may sound strange, but jacking your car up is a valuable strategy, in that it preserves the parking brake like the blocks would AND saves the tires from having to carry the weight of the vehicle throughout the storage time. HOWEVER, jacking the car up takes skill in placing the jacks in the correct place to carry the weight of the vehicle without damaging the undercarriage. Make sure to research your vehicle and place the jacks correctly. Visit this link for some tips!

Mouse Traps

Our final item is another one that many people fail to think of when parking their car or truck long-term, especially in outdoor storage space: mouse traps/poison. Believe it or not, rodents LOVE tight cozy places to crawl up into and build their nests. Nothing is better for those little guys than a vacant car that’s been there for a while. Placing traps and/or poison will help keep those critters away from your vehicle's undercarriage. It really is important to keep them out, as they can clog up air vents, chew up wiring, and even find themselves in the cab itself. There’s not much worse than coming back to your car or truck and opening the cab to find the sight and smell of a rodent paradise.

Handy location. Owners easy to communicate with. Prompt replies to email. Handy that there’s is a sano-dump on the property. We will be bringing our RV back this summer.

Things that I noticed during my stay. -They charge a 4 dollar gate access fee on top of your monthly fee. Which I don't understand why since other storage places do not. -The storage facility uses a manual gate with a magnetic interlock. To activate the magnetic interlock you need to have a "key". It looks like a 3.5mm headphone jack. The key is available with a 25 dollar deposit. Please note when I returned my key I only recieved 20 dollar back. -Overland drainage is poor leaving standing water in areas. Grading in access roads cause stalls to pool and causes a muddy mess. This storage facility is built on slough. Grading could be improved upon. -Staff apply stall numbers on the trailer units. Nice touch but these should be applied by the owners not the site operators. I do not appreciate staff doing things to my trailer without my knowledge. -Gate access hours are restricted to certain times of the year. For me this was undesirable. Please check times before committing. -Staff is super friendly and helpful and always answer the phone at any hour of the day. -They have a Sani dump area with water and sewer house at the ready. I can't comment on this as I never used their dump. -Stalls are claimed to be 13' wide measured to be 11 1/2 from lot line to lot line. They use 4x4 timbers staked down with rebar to indicate stall lines. This was asking for a tire blow out. With the timbers RVs/trailers that rarely ever move encroach into your stall. Stalls are filled with packed down pit run not road crush. -Every once in awhile they leave out free firewood.

I have stored my RV in many places and Sid’s is the best thus far. The assigned stalls are extra wide and the sani- dumps are great to have. The yard is secure with key and code access and the staff is friendly and great to deal with. Over the last couple of seasons they have done a ton of maintenance laying recycled asphalt throughout the yard making it virtually mud free. I would definitely recommend Sid’s Stoney Métis storage to a friend.

We contacted this place because it was close to our house, and the rate was cheaper than others, according to their website. But we only used this storage for less than one month, and I am leaving my honest review here. 1. We have 31ft travel trailer. According to the website, the rate was $65 with 6 months contract. BUT they make you pay 6 months of payment at once, NOT by monthly. I contacted 3 other storages nearby, and this was the only place required such thing. When I said I cannot do that, they made me pay $85 per month without the contract. Also they charged me $25 deposit for the "key", which I never received. I don't even know what it looks like. 2. Ok, let's say $85 dollars is fine too. But with that money, you are better off with other storages nearby. First of all, this is the only storage where there is no automatic door. You literally have to open the gigantic gate by pulling and pushing, which is not hard to do, but still annoying, especially when the wind blows hard. Other places have automatic door installed. Why are they charging us the same fee while we have to do this manually? 3. The road to this storage is super bumpy and full of mud. Considering snow melt, and a lot rain we got recently, expect your vehicle and trailer get super dirty trying to come in and out. Our truck was in disgusting state after pulling the trailer in this storage, enough to be complained by the neighbours about the mud we left in the underground parking gate. The ground inside of the storage is not clean either, with many puddles and bump. 4. We pulled our trailer out on 16th of June, and asked for the "key" refund back. No answer. I had to remind them again on 22nd of June. They said they would deposit it on Monday (24th). I had to remind them again about this today (26th) to get it finally refunded. $25 dollars is not a lot of money, but I did not appreciate the fact that I had to text them and bug them for more than a week for this. Considering that the owners are responsive (other than the time when I asked for the refund), and the location is good, this storage could be a lot nicer than this, if they offer more flexible payment and improve the road conditions. For now, I moved to another storage nearby and am happy with our choice.

Good storage site with sani dump for your trailers. The free firewood is OK, sites are clean, gravel pads.

Paula is the nicest as well as all the other friendly staff there. Great customer service and easy communication. Nice and close to airport, yet tucked away!

We parked our vehicle here a few times before and nothing happened, but this time we came back, after a long trip, to a car that got the catalytic converter stolen right after we left it there. The person who runs this place is very nice but once something like this happens, there’s no way you’ll park your vehicle here again.

We parked our trailer here for several years but it was time to move on due to our trailer being broken into recently. Other trailers in the lot also broken into as at least one owner placed a sign on their door indicating that there was nothing left in their trailer as it had been broken into. We once arrived to our trailer and someone had moved our trailer from our assigned spot, to a different one (maybe my fault as I had forgotten to put the hitch lock on but you still don’t expect that to happen). Although they have security cameras and they advised they would review them, they never did follow up with us. I feel as though with the break ins, maybe they could have upped their security but I rarely noticed anyone ever on site whenever we would go pick up our trailer. Maybe this explains the break ins. Their website states that the lot is camera monitored but really what’s the point if it does nothing. They also put 3 stickers on the front of our trailer, indicating our stall number, without informing or asking us. Once we left, it took 2 weeks to get our deposit back after 3 or 4 requests, despite being advised we would be refunded and then it taking 9 more days and 2 more requests to actually be refunded. Although there are positives like a dump station and water, the ground in the lot is riddled with weeds and pot holes. I don’t know why the website says extra wide asphalt roads, unless I am missing something, there are none as it’s all gravel. Anyway, we moved our trailer to another lot that is far better maintained and more secure for cheaper than what we paid here. I give two stars because when you do talk to someone they are very friendly
