Practice Based Assessment Panel Discussion

The Saskatchewan Physiotherapy Association (SPA) would like to acknowledge the Saskatchewan physiotherapy graduates and licensing candidates for their patience, perseverance and adaptability to the changing processes and standards and the Saskatchewan College of Physical Therapists (SCPT) and numerous leaders that have served the profession in the research, development, and implementation of the Practice Based Assessment to facilitate licensure.

The SPA is hosting an online informative and interactive experience for physiotherapists regarding the new PBA in partnership with the Saskatchewan College of Physical Therapists (SCPT).

Join us online on April 30^th from 10:00am to 11:00am after the SPA AGM.  In addition, there will be a virtual social following the presentation and panel discussion using the Remo platform that we enjoyed at last year’s AGM and collaboration day. 

The Journey

Jason Vogelsang will provide a brief historical outline of the events that have brought us to this point.

A brief overview of the current practice-based assessment (PBA) will be provided as well as process plans for feedback, review and adjustments to the PBA as appropriate.  Prior to joining the SCPT, Jason was the Assistant Registrar with the Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board (SPTRB) supporting the regulatory and operational functions of the organization.

Panel Discussion:

Self-regulation is a privilege as well as a responsibility for the PT profession.  How does the profession support the implementation of this change and support supervising therapists, graduates / candidates and leaders during this short to medium term solution?   How can the physiotherapy community execute this at a high level to ultimately serve the patients in need of access to high quality care?

We have an amazing group of volunteer panelists to discuss these important questions as well as questions from the membership during an interactive panel discussion moderated by Garnette Weber.

Panelists:

Jason Vogelsang

Jason is the Executive Director and Registrar of the Saskatchewan College of Physical Therapists (SCPT) where he provides leadership in the licensing and regulation of the physical therapy profession in Saskatchewan. 

Bronwyn Lasair

Bronwyn graduated in 1999 from U of A.  She worked in Alberta at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton and St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon for the past 10 years. She have supervised restricted licensees in both Alberta and Saskatchewan and was the main supervisor for two Practice Based Assessment candidates.  Bronwyn served on the SCPT working group  to review the Clinical Component of the Physiotherapy Competency Examination (PCE CC) in relation to licensure in Saskatchewan.

Dale Pitura

Dale is the President of the SCPT and has been a member of the SCPT council since 2017.  Dale has been a treating physiotherapist in Saskatchewan since 1995 when he graduated from the University of Saskatchewan.  He has held a variety of positions over the years from working with the Roughriders and University of Regina teams to management positions to ownership in a private physiotherapy clinic and a multidisciplinary health facility. He consults for the Saskatchewan Worker's Compensation Board and treats private clients at Lifemark. Dale served on the SCPT working group to review the Clinical Component of the Physiotherapy Competency Examination (PCE CC) in relation to licensure in Saskatchewan.

Dharmanshu Lightwala

Dharmanshu graduated from Rajiv Gandhi University, India with a Bachelor of Physical Therapy in 2014. He volunteered with the Ontario Physiotherapy Association to bring physiotherapy awareness through the #WeArePT campaign in 2019. He successfully completed the written component CAPR in 2018 and SCPT PBA 2022. He worked as a resident PT in Ontario for five months and 21 months in Saskatchewan. Currently he is working with Lifemark Health in Meadow Lake as a Registered PT.

Seve Speranza

Seve received his education at the University of Pretoria in Human Movement Sciences and then graduated from Physiotherapy in South Africa. His schooling experience included work in orthopaedics, cerebral palsy, neurology, spinal cord injuries, pulmonology, outpatients, sport injuries, and ICU settings. He graduated in 2016 and have been working as a physio in various hospital settings such as the orthopaedic, paediatric, NICU, PICU, ICU and outpatient settings. After immigrating to Canada in 2018, he completed the appropriate examinations to work and requalify as a physiotherapist in Canada. He successfully completed the SCPT PBA in the January of 2022. Currently, he works at CBI in Moose Jaw.

Networking Session

A virtual social time will take place afterwards on the Remo platform allowing people to virtual move between tables to network, connect, ask additional question etc.  The networking time will provide a casual environment for connections within our physiotherapy community.
