About S&M High Fidelity

When I was younger – back in the mid 1970’s – I experienced a minor yet defining moment in my life. While bored and on summer holidays I wandered into my first motorcycle shop, a Norton dealer in Vernon BC. I was nine years old at the time and remember being instantly grabbed by the scent of gasoline, leather, and rubber. I was hooked.

A few years later my first trip into a real Hi-Fi shop produced the same feeling of euphoria. Walking into the shop I was met by the strains of Yes’s Fragile playing on this wonderous system: black ominous-looking amplifiers, components covered in important looking knobs and switches feeding a pair of oak clad behemoths festooned with an array of drivers while the LP spinning on a jewel like turntable. At fourteen I was smitten once again.  I knew I had found something that would be with me for the rest of my life.

Why do I mention this little piece of personal history?  Because when we conceived S&M High Fidelity we made it our mission to resurrect the proper Hi-Fi store with a modern twist. We are obsessive about the art of playing back audio masterpieces. With both a nod to the past and a future vision of embracing new technologies, we will connect you to the greatest contribution the human race has given… music.

First time I went into S&M, met Mike, great person and very knowledgeable, I told him I was looking at a turntable upgrade, He showed me several turntables, I told him, that I will need to do some research, on what he showed me. Second time I went in, he had a Gold Note 425SE, purchased it. Went in 3 weeks later, told him that I'm looking for a reasonably priced second turntable to play second hand vinyl or questionable vinyl, purchased a Music Hall 3.3. I was at some of the higher end analog stores in the city, too much attitude for me, Mike treats you as a friend. Highly recommended seller.

I can imagine the last couple years have been a struggle for businesses like these, but Mike really knows his stuff and has the flexibility to give great deals, and it shows.. This hobby can be incredibly expensive and easy to take advantage of customers’ wallets, but from my experience (going back a few times now) Mike is clearly in it to share his passion, not rip people off. He doesnt just try to sell you the most expensive stuff, he listens to your needs and budget and suggests the best bang for your buck. He’s sifted through all the hi fi snake oil and what he’s got left is audio gold. And since he’s the owner and only staff, his prices are always better than ive seen anywhere else. New to this hobby I was skeptical that Id end up paying for premium gear and barely notice a difference, but I was incredibly delighted and surprised to find out how substantial the sound quality gains were with every upgrade he recommended. 10/10 SATISFIED.

I visited this Whyte avenue store about six months ago while on a continuing quest to upgrade my speakers, and had a long chat with owner Mike about my long love affair with audio, and sadly my diminished post-divorce and mid-pandemic budget... It's fair to say that Mike stocks sound systems that cost considerably more than my car, but also proved a knowledgeable guide within my price range, and I went home with a terrific pair of great speakers that paired perfectly with my existing system. I'm delighted these guys are on the scene here in Edmonton, and I'll be back to upgrade again soon. Thanks, Mike, good to know you, and I'll be back.

First time experience visiting Mike at S & M Fidelity. Stopped in to browse and inquire about setting up my daughter with a high quality entry level system. Mike knew exactly what I was looking for and had the components available in store. The experience parlayed into conversation about music, concerts and cars as Chad joined in. Mike set up the turntable and set me up with everything I needed to eventually plug and play. Couldn’t ask for better service. Great shop to visit for any hi-fi enthusiast. Highly recommended.

Amazing shop, significantly bigger inside then I expected. The owner is very knowledgeable, who provides excellent service, he isn't pushy or tries and upsell you. He provides you the best value and genuinely wants you to have a good experience with your speakers. Which I still am! I highly recommend checking this place out if your shopping for speakers.

I’m happy to share my excellent experience at S&M Hi-Fi. We are putting together our first system, and I was given top shelf professionalism by Mike in getting set-up with the final components I needed. Further, he tested the integrity of my two older monoblock amps, and energy speakers I purchased second hand. I couldn’t be happier with the service I received, and I would highly recommend anyone seeking audio equipment to start here first.

This review is not solely based on my latest purchase, but on my entire experience with Mike, starting in 2017, when he was a sales associate at Audio Ark to the owner of S&M Hi Fidelity. Mike has consistently offered great service and advice through my Audiophile journey, starting with a pair of Magnepan 1.7, 3.7i. Krell KSA 250, Atoll AM400/Pr400 etc... My latest purchase is a "pause" in my journey when I purchased a Gold Note system consisting of DS-10 plus, PA-1000 mono blocks and a pair of A3 Evo's I couldn't be happier with this system. Some may think this is a downgrade from the Magnepan's/Atoll's, but this is the best sounding system for me in my journey, Mike does not try to sell you the most expensive equipment, but guides you, based on your personal taste and budget. If you are starting your journey or along in your journey or just curious what good audio equipment sounds like.(doesn't have to be expensive) I highly recommend dropping by for a visit. It's very casual and there are no snobby salesmen in sight. Ken Ps: IMO Mike is one of the best turntable guys around.

Very nicely done store. I've left Edmonton but I know for distance buys Mike will take care of business that way too. No fear if you see their ads on CAM for instance. In store the place is nicely done and no one will balk at your music selection. Unlike some, S&M will gladly let you hear your Judas Priest or whatever else you enjoy without judgement. There is a passion for gear here not just $$$'s in eyes. I think it's working for them too as the underdog (SM) became the best audio shop in Edmonton quickly.
