About Rutherford House

Over a span of 34 years, from 1985 to 2019, the Friends of Rutherford House Society made numerous contributions to the Rutherford House Provincial Historic Site and we are the richer for it.

The Friends Society played an important role in supporting programming needs with historical interpreters, coordination and staffing for facility rentals of the House for special occasions such as engagement photos, receptions, and weddings. They funded numerous projects, including redevelopment of the gardens around the site, the creation of a tea room/restaurant and a gift shop, funding the publishing of Alexander Cameron Rutherford: A Gentleman of Strathcona, as well as numerous special events and programs, from drama productions to multi-course dinners to exhibits and displays.

More recently, they funded the publication of not one, but two books – Lilacs and Brick: The Life and Lives of Rutherford House and Rutherford, the Time Travelling Moose – as well as the development of a walking tour app, all of which have helped to promote the House and the Rutherford family.

Rutherford House wishes to thank the Friends Society, its board members, staff and its membership for all of their support over the years.

Visited for the first time to have lunch with my mom. The dining room was beautiful, the food was excellent (a 3 course lunch with about 8 delicious-looking dessert options!), and the service was superb! We followed up with a self-guided house tour and all of the staff took the time to answer our questions and give us additional details, as they were all very friendly and knowledgeable about the house and its history.

We went here for my wife's birthday for afternoon tea. It was one of her time wishes to come and check this place out, we were not disappointed. Excellent ambience, great staff and good experience over all. We were sat for our tea time and offered a menu of teas. She very much enjoyed the vintage house blend where I went for the more traditional Earl Grey. When I had set up the booking I had mentioned we had vegetarian restrictions and they full paid attention to it. We were blown away by the selection of pastries and savories that were brought out the table. The friendly staff explained all the various items. Each bite had us exclaiming how good each treat was. The tea was delicious as well. We never attended high tea before so we had a few reservations about attire and such but going business casual is perfectly fine. Overall a great experience and we will definitely make this at least a monthly traditional going forward!

I was there for the first time. I called the chef 2 days ahead on time and asked if he can make a vegan dish for me and vegetarian for my daughter. He made an excellent dish. I was amazed how a non-vegan chef made such a delicious dish. He also made a salad with a scoop of avocado ice cream ( yes ice cream on salad). Jeez it was yummy. Price was very reasonable for the quality and portion of dishes. Oh also the americano he made was so tasty. Highly recommended!

This is a must go for brunch! It was a set menu and everything was delicious. I first tried their Earl Grey Creme BruleΓ© at Taste of Edmonton 2019 and that definitely sold me on coming to try their food.

I have to admit I have not been inside the Rutherford House as I have walked past it many times. I hope that I will go some time soon to experience the inside and the food but in the meantime I will talk about the outside. It’s a beautiful building in a beautiful setting. Tucked away on the University of Alberta grounds in a back corner this is a gem. The history of the building is pretty cool. You should check it out. In its day when this building was built it had all the modern amenities. The Rutherford family played an important part in the early history of Edmonton. Oh and I hear the restaurant in the house is excellent.
