About RTR Ranch Retreat

About Daryl

As early as Ten years old, Daryl knew that some day he’d be raising and working horses at his own ranch. Runnin’ the Race Ranch Retreat is everything he dreamed of… the mountains, the horses, the outbuildings, the pasture.

Growing up as a city boy in Calgary, he was introduced to horses by his uncle who was a traditional cowboy. That tradition brought history, strength and depth to what it took to survive on a ranch in St. Paul, Alberta. Spending every chance he could Daryl would start learning and understanding more about horses through his Uncles horsemanship methods.

After a few years of riding and training his own horses, Daryl started roping, picked up a Roy Cooper calf roping book, learned from the pictures, and taught himself to rope calves and steers. Shortly after, he attended Mount Royal and the University of Calgary, he joined the  University of Calgary rodeo team dreaming of being a calf roper. It was there he ended up finding new passion in bull riding and his entire career outlook changed. He was rodeoing from that day on and living the life of a cowboy.

He became a member of the Canadian Bull Riders Association and was a top 10 Bull Rider three years running (1996-1998). Competing in the PRCA Professional Cowboys Rodeo Association where he fulfilled a lifelong dream to travel to Texas and defeat pro Texas bull riders, who are considered the best in the world.

After retiring from competition, he began using his education in Sports Management and NCCP National Coaching Certification Program training kids and adults in various sports. He has expanded that coaching and passion into the world of Natural Horsemanship. Allowing his knowledge to help kids and adults live there dream to be a cowboy or cowgirl.

There’s nothing he enjoys more than a sunset bareback ride on Whisper, along with his beautiful bride Amanda riding beside him.

About Amanda

Every morning Amanda wakes up and walks to the pasture to whistle in the horses, her heart explodes with the truth that her dreams as a little girl growing up on a northern Alberta farm have come true. Hanging the laundry on the line in such a peaceful, serene setting makes it a joy and not a chore. With her sparkly purple headband and blinged out jeans, she harrows the yard with her 1977 Massey-Ferguson tractor.

She fell in love with horses when her grandpa would take her riding as a child. That passion to ride and own horses grew, along with her determination and perseverance that she could conquer her fear of these large animals.

After high school, Amanda attended the Fairview College Equine Program in Fairview, Alberta. She completed her practicum in Purcell, Oklahoma, began training horses on the side and went back to school to become a Registered Massage Therapist. With two degrees under her belt, and confidence increased, her dreams of becoming an award-winning barrel racer from Texas grew so strong that she followed them all the way to Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas and Queen Creek, Arizona. There she rode and assisted other trainers. For the next five years, she spent six months in Canada and six months on the road in the Unites States to further her training.

Seeing the benefit of massage after ten years of practice, she traveled to California to complete an Equinology course on Equine Massage. She combines her Massage Therapy for riders with her Equine Massage to bring out the best in both horse and rider. Amanda is an insured instructor that works with all ages of kids and adults to teach private and group riding lessons, summer camps and barrel racing. Her focus is on natural horsemanship training and lessons inspired by the Parelli method of training she learned at the Parelli Campus in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.

She also participates in the Alberta Green Certificate Program for Olds College which provides trainees with opportunities to enter a variety of agriculture-related, structured learning pathways as a part of their senior high school program and to earn a credential leading to a career in agribusiness.  It is an approved complementary program of studies available to all Alberta high schools.

My sister and I have stayed at RTR twice in a row now while we were in the area to see family. The first time, we just stumbled upon them. The second time, there was no doubt in our minds where we would stay! The space was pristine, not a speck of dust to be found, and Amanda and the family are some of the most gracious hosts I have had the pleasure of staying with. I would recommend RTR to anyone who is looking for a little getaway. We have already booked our next weekend in 2022!

Beautiful, peaceful , clean and comfortable ! My sister and our two children stayed at Amanda and Daryl's over the weekend. We had a few friends staying at Aspen Crossing Campsite and it is a 10-minute drive away. Amanda and Daryl's place was large and so clean with everything you would need! The beds are so comfortable, I got the best sleep I have had in a long time, and the property is amazing. The kids loved the dog and horses. I highly recommend visiting, we will definitely be back.

If I could give this place more than five stars I would. Daryl and Amanda were amazing hosts, whose number one priority was making sure we were comfortable. My family and I stayed in the Ranch Suite with my Inlaws and it was the perfect accommodation for the 8 of us. My mother inlaw is celiac and Amanda went above and beyond to accommodate her gluten-free needs. We loved exploring the property, my kids were over the moon with the horses, cats and Jaylo(the dog). My kids did horse riding and it was so much more than just putting the kids on the back of a horse and leading around a pen, Daryl and Amanda took the time to show us how to build a relationship with the horses. Each of my kids got to lead the horses, Daryl and Amanda were so patient by the end my two oldest were being taught how to ride with out help. This place is great for families with plenty to do and see, the games room was a hit with everyone, we even had a campfire. My wife was able to escape for an hour and had a massage from Amanda and she said it was the best massage she has ever had. I would recommend this place to anyone and we can't wait to go back.

We recently discovered RTR Ranch Retreat, a working 125 yr old horse ranch an hour outside Calgary, Alberta. Last weekend we spent an incredible 2 nights and had an amazing time. The girls (11 & 13) had the full equine experience with the awesome owner Amanda, who taught them to ride and horsemanship skills. Amanda was such a great teacher with the girls, patient, passionate about her horses, and so knowledgable. We stayed in the adorable and well-appointed bunkhouse, were visited by a great horned owl, gave belly rubs to their dog Jaylo, played ping pong and air hockey in the games room, and enjoyed the gorgeous prairie skies and sunsets. Amanda also offers massages. We totally plan to go back. It was a breath of fresh air.

I am SO glad we found and stayed at RTR ranch retreat! Amanda and Daryl are labeled as superhosts on the AirBnB website and that is an understatement. They went above and beyond from the minute I booked to making our stay comfortable, peaceful and pleasant. Amanda made gluten free breakfast items for my mum and made sure, several times we had everything we needed. The accommodation was clean, comfortable and well stocked with coffee, tea and little treats. My four children (aged 4 to 11) LOVED the animals and horse riding and are still talking about it a couple of weeks later. I had the most amazing massage ?‍♀️ which left me even more relaxed. We are already planning our next stay.

My daughter and I stayed in the bunkhouse for 2 nights to celebrate her birthday. We loved it! It was everything listed and more. Amanda and Daryl were so kind and accommodating. We enjoyed horseback riding lessons and a trail ride. Such a great experience. And Amanda even made a delicious dessert to help us celebrate my girls bday. Little personal touches like that made our stay so memorable and left us not wanting to go home at the end of our weekend.

The best western experience ever! The cabins are wonderful and the hospitality of the owners is just great. They made you feel that you are part of the place. I also always wanted to feel comfortable in horse riding, and I finally got a fantastic experience. The owners are professional mentors that made me feel I was a cowgirl! The only thing I regret is that my husband and I did not have enough time to get a therapy massage. Next time for sure. Thanks Amanda and Daryl for so many great memories. Can't wait to see you soon.
