Piper Creek Optimist Club of Red Deer - Red Deer

The Red Deer Piper Creek Optimist Club was founded in 1985 as an initiative of the Red Deer Optimist Club to attract a younger demographic. Several friends and professional associates organized a club of “up and comers” to promote community involvement and philanthropy.

The group met weekly for lunch and continues to meet at least twice a month, once for lunch and once for dinner.

Prior to the internet, there was a monthly newsletter. The members volunteered and later organized their own initiatives.

Early on, members distributed thousands of phone-books annually and organized a “Just Say NO” rally for Grade Four students. The club also sponsored DARE. It has supported Junior Golf and Junior Curing tournaments, as well as the Essay Contest.

As well as continuing to support local youth initiatives through volunteerism, the Piper Creek Club fundraises for local organizations.

Several youth sports and music initiatives have received funding. The youth reading room of the Downtown Branch of the Red Deer Public Library bears the Club seal. The Red Deer Regional Health Centre Nursery and the Aspire Special Needs Resources Centre received the Club’s support.

For several years the Club supported the Cures for Kids Radiothon. More recently, the Club has donated to the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter (CAWES) and the Central Alberta Women’s Outreach Centre. The Club was the first in Red Deer to organize the Ladies’ Gala, a ladies only evening, beginning in 2005.

In partnership with Hockey Alberta, the Club has supported a “Battle of Alberta” night to raise funds for youth hockey in Alberta. The annual President’s dinner over the years has included golf, bowling, poker and scotch events.

Over the years, the Club has raised over $2 million for local community initiatives. The Piper Creek Optimist Club supports local youth initiatives through volunteerism and fundraising. Over the years the Club has encouraged an ethos of community service and built fellowship amongst members through frequent social activities.
