About Old Strathcona Youth Society

A Haven for Vulnerable Youth

In December, 1997, a group of interested Edmonton organizations began meeting to look at creative ways to provide youth around Whyte Avenue with a secure place to gather.  This place would allow youth to be safe, to grow, to be supported, and to meet people.  As a result, the Old Strathcona Youth Co-op was established in 1998. We are dedicated in being a non-judgmental, flexible, street level resource concerned with protecting the safety, self-worth and dignity of youth.  OSYS has become a focal point for youth to access information and resources to meet their needs.

Our Mission: To provide purposeful resources and create a safe and supportive environment that fosters youth empowerment and development.

What an amazing organization geared to help youth who really need it. They are always looking for your support, so please keep OSYS in mind.

This is a place for youth who are homeless or experiencing difficulties to drop by and get support. They partner with an organization's who hires people to do fundraising and proceeds go to OSYS via door to door from their privately hired employees. Youth can come here for clothes, food, support, housing, employment, education, and more. It's worth a drop in or even volunteering!!

Had a young woman come to our door requesting donations. The coupons for these places are no where I would choose to go, which is fine. I donated for the greater good of the youth that go here. After researching what the shelter provides I see that it is one meal PER WEEK and the hours are no where near what I thought they would be. Reduced hours for Friday and Saturday and closed on Sunday's and Monday's. What is highly disappointing is to see this stated on their site "The Old Strathcona Youth Society houses a needle exchange, one of the few on the Southside of Edmonton. Access to clean injection supplies, condoms and other birth control, and information on harm reduction is available at all times." I do not support offering supplies to youth so they can partake in doing drugs at all. I will not be providing funds to this organization if they knock at my door once more.

I have been involved with the OSYS for years and continue to support the amazing work they do. This is a non-judgmental and safe space where youth can go and they will be met 'where they are at' and given the appropriate resources accordingly.

Love the staff there! Their very easy to talk too, they are also very understanding and incredibly resourceful. I would highly recommend to anyone who is homeless between ages 15-24 just to go and ask about their resources

Someone knocked on my door asking for donation last year, an hour ago a lady did the same selling a chocolate as a way of fundraising. I told the lady the same answer I told that guy before, we do not give out cash(don't have much anyway), if it's CRA registered, we are gladly to donate. She then walked away. 3 stars only mean neutral, I don't know this society well, but I will pledge my little support. Lived in Cavanagh.

We did our donation from the door to door fundraising, and that was the first time I heard of this organization. With a great curiousity I visited your website, to know your more, and to see how could we help more in the future. I am very happy there is a place for the youth people who is needing help. Here are some thoughts----to help a young person, not only give them materials like clothes ,shoes, food, etc.,also should include some good education, to help them avoiding drugs and other harmful situations in their lives. And do you accept book donations?
